Who can believe this was our 6th NWDA Halloween weekend? Falling during the school half term enabled a few of the Committee to be out on site on the Tuesday to peg out and plan the field for the 118 units that were booked to attend. The weather was very kind to us and unbelievably mild for the time of year. Wednesday came and, with work commitments out of the way for many, more of the working party began to arrive and work soon began on the creation of the Ghost Walk marquee – a culmination of Ade’s ideas from watching too many SAW films!

Thursday morning came, again with glorious weather, which allowed most of the men to don shorts and t-shirts to begin erecting the marquee Castle frontage. Meanwhile, the catering team headed off in Lin’s little white van for a trip to the Cash & Carry to purchase all the food and refreshments required to feed a very busy working party and also our guests on Saturday evening. Our thanks goes to Faye, Mary and June who did a fantastic job of feeding the working party with crusty baguettes and endless teas and coffees.

The next job on the list was to decorate our hired marquee with Halloween bunting and 400 balloons to ensure it all looked impressive and welcoming for our guests’ arrival on Friday. Thanks to balloon pumps and some willing helpers, the marquee was all set for the weekend’s activities in no time at all!

Friday morning came and Stewards Di, Mark, Shaun and Caz, along with their team of marshalls, began welcoming our pre-booked members from early in the morning until late into the night. It seemed that no sooner had people pitched, than they were busy decorating their units to the theme of Halloween. The Ghost Walk team put the finishing touches to the walk and the marquee, and then practiced their dance routine, choreographed by Ade’s dad, John Houldey. Luckily, they managed to get through the routine without any injuries from the "knives" used in this dance… ! Then it was time for the boys to get transformed in whatever ghoulish character they were to be in the Ghost House with the help of Liz Reynolds, a first class make up artist, who was responsible for the very realistic blood and guts appearance of most of them!! You did a great job Liz – well done!

Meanwhile, the catering team were busy preparing warm soups (to warm the Ghost Walkers beforehand) and mulled wine (to calm them after they had been scared witless!) As darkness fell, and with the scarers in place, the first group headed off and the waiting groups became a little unsettled by the screams coming from the woods! Serving behind the soup desk was very rewarding hearing everyone’s feedback as they returned one by one, laughing and praising all the hard work that had gone into it. With the last group back safely, all the scarers were called on stage to be thanked and have their true identities exposed in the light! Many members took this opportunity to have their pictures taken with some of the very frightening looking scarers. Friday night ended with a great disco and some very sore feet!!

We all woke to a glorious Saturday morning. The CCY leaders and assistants (Andy/Ruth/Shaun/Caz), helped by Tracey Scott, had all been busy arranging lots to do to keep the little ones busy - colouring competitions, apple bobbing, doughnut eating, tuck shop, tombola and to finish off a Pumpkin Piñata full of sweets. As the clearing up commenced, the other end of the marquee was turned into a mini cinema for the kids to watch "Abbot and Costello Meets Frankenstein".

Behind the scenes, the Catering team were back in the kitchen preparing all the hot food for the Saturday night party. On the menu was Chinese Chicken Curry, Chilli Con Carne and a Vegetable Chilli, all served with Crusty Bread, and Hot Dogs for the little ones. With everything prepared and Hell’s Kitchen ready to go, Lin, Jan, Jayne Houldey, Jayne Bishop, Caz Roberts and Georgie Tain had the chance to join some of the other DA members and working party for a well deserved drink and chill out couple of hours in the Club next to the site.

As dusk descended everyone returned to their vans to get the children dressed up ready for "Trick or Treat". Then it was time to get on our scary outfits and head to the marquee. There was soon a queue of hungry ghouls and it gave us a good chance to have a look at the amazing costumes as everyone was led through from the main marquee. With everyone fed and the mammoth washing up job done, mainly by Aneel (Jan’s personal washer upperJ ) and Paul Grummet, we all headed to the marquee to dance the night away to another night of fantastic music. We were overwhelmed at the sheer amount of people who had made such an amazing effort. Andy’s tunes ensured that the dance floor never emptied, until unfortunately Walk On had to be played and the night came to an end. Unfortunately, there were a few of us who did not want the night to end and before we knew it, 3.30 am had arrived and we reluctantly dragged ourselves to bed!

We were all woken on Sunday morning to torrential rain, gusting winds and the sound of balloons popping as the last day of our meet began. Coffee Morning got under way, with many announcements and prizes to be given out. Congratulations go to the following winners:-

Best Dressed Male : Lloyd and Eddie Robinson

Best Dressed Female : Sharon and Lorraine Grommitt

Best Under 8’s Boy : Alfie

Best 8 – 14 Boy : Liam Bratt

Best Under 8’s Girl : Megan Nicklin

Best 8 – 14 Girls : Georgia

Best Dressed Unit : Carol French

Best Jack "O" Lantern: Lloyd and Kaz

Colouring 6+ : Cordella Green

Colouring 5+ : Benji Tain

Scavenge Hunt : Sophie Boyce

What’s in the Pumpkin: Liz Francis

In addition to all of the above, four very special presentations were made to NWDA’s younger members who have recently turned 8. Well done to Molly Kennings, Lottie Frome, Jenny Francis and Jacob Tain who all received NWDA CCJ t-shirts.

Steve stepped back during proceedings, and handed the mike to Gary Bratt, our Charity Co-ordinator, in order that he could promote NWDA’s Charity Night on Saturday 21st November at Avenue Bowls Club, Coundon, Coventry. Unbeknown to Gary, Di Nicklin made a surprise presentation of a cheque for £800 which she had raised at The Pallasades – this has to be the only time in history that Gary Bratt was actually speechless! What a fantastic effort and well done Di for your hard work.

Steve then read out the nominations for this weekend’s "Brocklehurst" award, of which there were a few!. The culprits for acts of stupidity this weekend included Tracey "Crap Cardigan", for putting a slow cooker on a washing up stand – for it to then fall straight through to the floor; Andy Tain, for pointing out a "Chinese Lantern" floating through the sky - which was actually a light on the top of someone’s pole; Maureen Bishop, one of the Best Dressed Unit Judges for saying "shame the units haven’t got numbers on, so we can identify them easier". When it was pointed out to her that all cars have registration plates, she said "What if they don’t have a car?"!!!! And finally, our own Chairman, Steve Kennings, for rushing to get from one part of the ghost walk to another, getting tangled up in chains and falling flat on his face. The "clapometer" results went overwhelmingly in favour of Steve Kennings. Not to be outdone, Steve then went on to present the end of season Brocklehurst to the "buffoon" who has received this prestigious award previously and whose act of "buffoonery" is outstanding! The present holder, June Roberts, gladly handed over the trophy to our very own Georgina Tain, on behalf of her husband Andy, who was taking a trailer back to storage! Andy’s act of buffoonery happened at August Bank Holiday when, after a long night and a few too many beers, pushed his son in his pushchair back to their caravan, only to realise when taking him out that it wasn’t in fact his child and he had taken the wrong pushchair!!!

With coffee morning over and clearing up done – it was then time to make sure the field had been left as we found it and head home to get ready for work the next day!

Our thanks go to everyone who was part of making this meet a huge success. It takes the efforts of the members dressing up their units, and themselves, and keeping the atmosphere as amazing as it was.

During the weekend Steve took a couple of opportunities to point out that this could be the last Halloween meet. This is mainly based on all the hard work that goes into it and the fact that year on year the meet makes a financial loss due to the scale of the meet. However, this gave us the opportunity to listen to our supporters – many of whom said that we should put the cost of the meet up to cover the loss. The Committee will meet during the next month to make a final decision, however, in the meantime, your feeback is invaluable so please feel free to e-mail us or use the Contact form on the whole page.

Conkers and Pancakes

Studley

25th-27th September 2009

Stewards-Youth Leaders and Youth Members

Smashing and Delicious are two words that can be applied to the Conkers and the Pancakes this weekend. Sun and Fun are two other words that spring to mind.

As you may have gathered we had a very successful weekend, with the site at Studley being fuller than I have ever seen it before. We were efficiently greeted by our Youth members, who had their work cut out trying to fit us all in, and were promised a weekend of activities to keep us entertained at the same time as raising funds for the Youth Section. The marquee was up, and ready to bring the whole area alive with music, lights and laughter Friday evening; although we were respectfully quiet by 11 pm. Promise!

On Saturday morning our Youth Members were busy taking names for the Conkers Contest, as well as persuading us to part with our money for a go at Guess the Name of the Teddy, Bonus Ball, the Football Card, and to buy Raffle Tickets. Once we were able to escape, some of us went shopping in Redditch, some went to nearby Broad lane Caravans, and some sat around trying to complete the quiz we had been given as we arrived. We had to name the faces of celebrities that started out as Child Stars.

At last it was time for the Conkers Competition to begin. Contestants battled in the afternoon heat, conkers gleaming in the sun, until we ended up with our two finalists and the winners of the kids contest. The kid’s final was between Katie and Joseph-with Joseph being the victor. The two adult finalists lay down their conkers for the evening as they prepared for the final the next day.

After a BBQ we were gradually drawn to the marquee by the tempting smell of pancakes (cooked by youth members) and by the sounds of good music. A great evening unfolded with everyone being in a party mood.

There were surprisingly few hangovers (that anyone would admit to!) on Sunday morning as we gathered outside for the final of The Conkers Contest. Shaun and Lorraine went into battle and Shaun was soon declared the winner. After presenting Shaun with his prize our Chairman Steve Kennings began Coffee Morning by informing us that 41 units had been camped for the weekend from eight different DA’s (District Associations)

Steve went on to congratulate all our Youth Members for actively being involved with raising funds this weekend for future Youth Rallies and activities. Even the CCJ (Camping Club Juniors, aged 8 to 11 years) managed to raise some money, all by themselves, by conducting their own fundraising activities. Sam, Jacob, Lottie, and Joseph were also congratulated for each sleeping in their tents, by themselves, in the CCJ area, for the first time this weekend. Well Done.

Steve then took the opportunity to advertise forthcoming events such as our famous Halloween meet at Wilmcote, a Charity Race and Auction Night in November, and the Christmas Party (details of which can be found on the websites Socials page)

Bonus Ball winner was John Harding, Name the Bear was won by Ethan, Football Card winner was Tony Roberts, and the winners of the Quiz were Denise and Derek.

Joseph’s Mum received his Conkers prize on his behalf because he had gone to play in a football match; although he had his photograph taken when he returned later.

And finally: There were many nominations for the Brocklehurst Award this weekend, including one for Tracey (crap cardigan) who was frantically searching for her dog Friday night . . . until someone reminded her she hadn’t actually brought him this weekend! But by popular demand it was awarded jointly to Diane Nicklin for being a dutiful (if a little drunk!) Mother by going to her sons tent to tuck him in (turning off his lantern and kissing him goodnight etc) . . . only it WASN’T Lewis’ tent she had gone into, it was Sam’s!! Also to Kevin Frume for being a ‘know all’ (too complicated a story to explain) when it came to cars!

Yew Tree Farm

Pound Bank, near Bewdley

18th-20th September 2009

Stewards-Mark and Michelle Lievers

It may have been a comparatively long journey for a Friday evening, in fading light, dodging impatient motorists, wishing we hadn’t followed the advice of Sat’ Nav’; but it turned out to be well worth it.

The lovely site at Yew Tree Farm on the edge of the Wyre Forest was well populated this weekend and by the time we had set up, eaten, and taken a stroll around the field on this very mild evening, the rush hour traffic was but a distant memory. And by the time we had been to the pub, conveniently situated just outside the site, we were completely chilled!

I have to mention that our house guests who had moved in last weekend, the Daddy Long Legs, were still in residence: Some sprang back into life as soon as the lights were switched on, some were found in sad crumpled heaps in various corners of the caravan, and some were soon snapped up by the dog!

So, having evicted the Crane Flies and reclaimed the caravan as our own, we awoke to a gloriously warm and sunny day Saturday morning. Breakfast outdoors was first on the agenda. Sitting around chatting was next!

However, having sat around for quite long enough, by mid afternoon we decided we ought to do something and set off to explore.

We hadn’t gone far when Steve found himself having to peel a Dragonfly off the tarmac after it almost met its end under the wheels of a car. We took it back to the caravan, where it posed for photographs before flying off in search of a mate, vowing never to fly low over a road again!

By this time it was so late we opted to go to The Forestry Commission Visitor Centre, approximately two miles away, by car, where we spent a couple of hours walking some of the circular woodland walks. The centre has routes to follow with signs to say what wildlife to look out for and Sam managed to kidnap an unusual caterpillar to identify later. It also gave Steve another opportunity to get close up and personal with a few more mini beasts on the macro setting of his new camera!

In addition there is a fantastic outdoor adventure centre there which consists of a series of tree top bridges, tunnels, and zip wires to negotiate (all under supervision and with safety harnesses) for ages 10 years and over and takes around 3 hours to complete. Sam is already planning his 10th birthday there in 2 years time!

When we finally returned to the camp site a BBQ was definitely next on the agenda even though it was dark by the time we got it.

We then decided we wouldn’t waste a beautiful evening inside the pub so sat around, in various groups, under a starry ceiling with the forest treetops silhouetted against the night sky. Poetic or what?!

Sunday morning was equally as glorious as the previous day, although by the time I was awake I discovered that Steve had already been on an hour long walk with the dog, making the most of footpaths and scenery that we just do not have in Hallgreen! By the way Jack, our juvenile Jack Russell, gave us one final memory of the fishing weekend when we arrived home last week: he ate the remaining maggots…then brought them back up all over the kitchen floor 5 minutes later!

During Coffee Morning Chairman Steve Kennings informed us that 53 units had attended from South Wales, East Worcester, and North Warwickshire. He then reminded us all that next weekend’s Conkers and Pancakes meet will be hosted by our Youth members with a focus on raising funds for youth activities.

Ann Francis won the Bonus ball, and Trevor Whitehead won the Brocklehurst. He had set off for Button Oak on Saturday afternoon insisting he knew exactly where he was going; which made it hilarious when he arrived back at the site 5 minutes later having driven full circle around the local lanes!

George and Faye Nicklin were then called out to the front to allow us to publicly thank them for being first class stewards at the Isle of Wight Holiday Site for 10 weeks again this year. They had a very busy time there.

Once Coffee Morning was over we ventured off to do what we had intended to do the day before; which was to WALK to the visitor centre ‘cross country’, or ‘off road’. I am proud to say we successfully navigated our way there, rewarded ourselves with an ice-cream, then turned around and came back again! Needless to say the tranquillity, beauty, and fresh air of the forest was something we were glad we hadn’t missed.

Maybe if those impatient motorists that we passed on Friday evening did what WE do every weekend they might still be anxious to get there, but would definitely be of calmer frame of mind!

The Riddings, Atherstone

11th-13th September 2009

Stewards-Shaun and Caz Roberts

It’s that time of year again: Crane flies, commonly known as Daddy Longlegs (also named Pop Stanleys a few years ago by one of our younger members!) were out in force! By the end of Friday evening it seemed like the whole local population of them had moved into our caravan!

Apart from that it was a beautiful evening, with a hint of autumn in the air, spent eating, drinking, and standing around outside (while the Daddy Longlegs did whatever Daddy Longlegs do in the warmth of our caravans!)

Of course it was also the time of year when we hold our annual fishing contest on one of the pools below the camp site.

Despite any excess drinking the previous evening the men folk were up (or kicked out of bed by their other halves) bright and early Saturday morning for the peg draw, before they set off down the drive for a hard days fishing.

Back at the caravan I was personally in my element, being able to fulfil the need to do some housework, and spend some quality time with the child and the dog-though not necessarily both together- after a week spent juggling parenthood, wifehood, career, and dog owner responsibilities!

Needs fulfilled I was then eager to pop along to the fishing pool to see how Steve and the others were getting on in their quest to net the best catch of the day. After several updates throughout the day I can report that, basically, a couple of them caught some big fish, a few of them caught a lot of smaller fish, and some of them didn’t catch anything at all!

The day was broken up with regular rations of bacon sandwiches from the kiosk, delivered by the lovely ladies of The Riddings; and freshly prepared baguettes from Caz’s caravan, delivered by the even lovelier ladies of NWDA.

At 3 o’clock everyone gathered for the all important weigh in. After Andy Flear’s catch weighed in very early on at 26 lb, it was quite clear that it would take a lot to beat him; and although some came close (not a lot) he was declared the winner.

And so we helped our men carry their fishing gear back to the camp site (well, some of us did!) to be packed away into the loft for another year; listening to accounts of ‘the one that got away’ as we went!

The glorious weather meant that most of us chose to BBQ later, because at this time of year every BBQ we can fit in is a bonus now. But that was after we went along the road for a pre-dinner drink at the local pub-which conveniently had a bouncy castle for the kid’s entertainment.

On Sunday morning Chairman Steve Kennings informed us that 30 units had attended the weekend. He went on to thank Andy Nicklin for organising the fishing contest, and Caz and the girls for catering for the fishermen (as well as those remaining on site) by preparing lunchtime baguettes.

A mention went to James for catching nothing but sunburn in the fishing contest; and presentations were made to runner up Harry Reid, aged 13, whose catch weighed in at 19 lb and to our winner Andy Flear.

Gary Bratt advertised a forthcoming Race Night/Auction being held near Coventry to raise money for this year’s charity; and members of the CCJ (Camping Club Juniors) spoke about their own fundraising achievements. They were each then presented with a certificate for speaking at coffee morning (the kids, not Gary)

Bonus ball was won by Jenny Edwards this week, who had to receive her winnings all in £1 coins; and the football card winner was Chris Edwards!

After a few nominations for the Brocklehurst Award it was jointly awarded, by public vote, to Shaun Roberts AND Mark Nicklin:

Whilst at the pub Saturday afternoon Shaun, being concerned when Tracy (of ‘crap cardigan’ fame) complained she felt cold, reached over to someone’s pushchair to offer her the use of one of our cardigans…only it WASN’T one of OURS! The rightful owner was not amused!

The award also went to Mark because he almost started a major ‘man hunt’ Saturday night when he could not be found anywhere. After looking for him, knocking on lots of caravan doors, and being on the verge of calling the Police he was eventually found UNDER his caravan bed!!

So it is not difficult to see how a laugh on a relatively quiet, and sunny, weekend can help to alleviate the effects of a stressful week and prepare you for the next. I’m looking forward to next weekend already.

Weston on Avon, near Stratford

4th-6th September 2009

Stewards-Trevor and Mary Whitehead

Well, we nearly had the field all to ourselves this weekend. With a grand total of 7 units it was quite an intimate gathering.

After initial greetings everyone more or less kept themselves to themselves Friday evening; and after taking the dog for a late walk, on what turned out to be a very mild evening, we turned in for an early night too.

But we were up bright and early Saturday morning because the sun was shining so we decided to go to a Country Show we had seen advertised:

Approximately 18 miles from where we were camped, the Morton-in-Marsh Show is an annual countryside event that has been staged on a large farming estate for many years. There were 3 arenas, several big marquees, many interesting trade stands and stalls, plenty of food outlets, and enough toilet units to cope with the crowds.

We thoroughly enjoyed the whole event and finally headed back to the campsite after 6pm still wondering whether or not we HAD seen everything!

We made several purchases of items guaranteed to make life easier; watched parades of Prize Livestock and Vintage Tractors as well as Sheepdog demonstrations; marvelled at an Australian Quad Bike Stuntman; laughed at the Terrier Racing; came very close to some very big horses; had photo’s taken standing next to large, shiny agricultural machinery; took MANY photo’s of two very agile young ladies performing breathtaking manoeuvres on their ponies; and spent a small fortune on Bison Burgers, ice-creams and Americano coffee-each of which was delicious!!

By the time we arrived back at camp we were rapidly losing day light, but that didn’t stop most of us having a BBQ. Afterwards several of us braved the autumnal chill for a while before heading indoors for another cosy, early night!

We weren’t the only ones that had a lovely day though. Others reported they had also been spending money at places like Wellsbourne Market, or in Stratford.

Sunday morning saw us all having a welcome lie-in and just about managing to turn up for Coffee Morning at 11.30! Trevor made a few announcements then we had another cup of coffee, finished off the biscuits, and sat around talking for a while longer.

However, we did then decide to make the most of the pleasant weather and walk along the river to Welford-on-Avon to buy an ice-cream at the village shop by the maypole. We continued along one of the Public Footpaths, saw a house we could buy if we win the lottery this week, and called at a very nice Pub for soft drinks.

By the time we returned to the secluded little site that was home for the weekend, we found we would be the last to leave-again!

August Bank Holiday

28th-31st August 2009

Evesham Sports Club

Stewards-Steve and Lin Kennings

Supported by the NWDA committee

"Hi-de-Hi. Good morning campers". For this weekends vacation we were transported back in time to the 1950’s when holiday camps were all the rage, as depicted by the 1970’s T.V ‘sit com’ Hi-de Hi.

Everyone certainly seemed to be in the holiday spirit as they arrived to check into OUR holiday camp during the day and evening of Friday; some just in time to join us in the marquee for an evening of music, impromptu joke telling, and a quiz-which was won by the Rochelle family. Being law abiding campers we were, of course, all quiet in our chalets (aka caravans/tents) by 11 pm.

On Saturday morning there was much excitement as our Youth members prepared to be launched onto the river Avon in canoes, under the guidance and supervision of members from the Canoeing Group of The Camping and caravanning Club. It all went swimmingly well and not a single participant remained dry!

Meanwhile, for those not afloat, there was Clown Face Painting in the marquee; which explained why there were a few clowns taking part in the Holiday camp Games that followed! I am not sure who the winners were, but I do know that a LOT of people got very wet!

Running slightly later than planned due to the popularity of canoeing, the Bingo went ahead in the late afternoon sunshine, with a few people walking away with more money in their pockets than when they arrived.

There was just enough time for a BBQ before the sound of music from the 1950’s began to draw the happy campers back into to the marquee for a fun packed evening of entertainment in the style of Maplin’s Holiday Camp.

The Glamorous Granny Contest was won by West Mids DA’s VERY glamorous Patricia Colley; Tony Roberts was declared Grumpy Granddad; best knobbly knees belonged to George Holland; and the Fancy Dress Competition winners were Eric Potter, and Ann Francis, who really looked the part.

After a good nights rest the kids were back in the arena on Sunday morning for Volleyball Training and a Mini Tournament. Even the adults found some spare energy to take part in their Volleyball Tournament. Alternatively you could go into the marquee for a Dance Class with Andy Frear, who conducted a more modern interpretation of Maplin’s own Barry and Yvonne.

Also, due to demand, our canoeing experts kindly agreed to run an extra session for some of the adults who had been yelling words of advice, from the river bank, to their kids the previous day. It was SOON proved that it is easier said than done; and I wouldn’t be surprised if the instructors were secretly wishing for the KIDS back! In fact we missed a Fund Raising opportunity as we could have sold tickets had we known it was going to be SO entertaining to watch!

There was a little time during the afternoon to stroll along the river bank (carefully stepping over some VERY long fishing poles belonging to the professional fishermen/women whose names were, fortunately, displayed on boards as I doubt any of us would have known who they were! ) to the Fishing Show Marquees on the park grounds in Evesham. It didn’t matter if you weren’t interested in fishing though because there were fairground stalls, a craft marquee, an ice-cream van (as well as other food vans) AND a beer tent!

However some members were busy making last minute adjustments to their inventions to be presented in the Dragon’s Den in the marquee from 7.30 pm onwards.

Quite a lot of people had taken the time and trouble to make and bring along their inventions . . . which included a poopa scoopa, a disguise for drink cans, and some that are probably best not mentioned at all! The NWDA Dragons predictably gave THEM all a hard time, and US all a good laugh!

Afterwards we were treated to a performance of the dance learnt by those that had attended Andy’s Dance Class earlier.

A very rousing Last Night Disco followed, with great music selected by Mark and Shaun.

The weather for Monday’s Coffee Morning was wonderfully warm, as we sat around outside with a delicious English Cream Tea. Our Chairman Steve Kennings began by saying that there were representations from quite a few District Associations, including some from Teesside who had arrived after a 7 hour journey! We were also delighted to have around twenty CCY (Camping Club Youth aged 12 years upwards) and five CCJ (Camping Club Juniors aged 8 to 11 years) in their own area.

Steve went on to thank all holiday campers for taking part in the various activities; guest DJ Allan Davis, along with Ted Capper; ALL the committee and their families; and the Editors of our seasonal newsletter Bear Facts.

We then had a parade of anyone present who was celebrating a birthday this week-including NWDA Treasurer Aneel Khanna who reached the age of 50 (said to be The Youth of Old Age!) and sang Happy Birthday to them all.

Steve publicly thanked the Camping Club members from the Canoeing Group who gave up most of their weekend to expertly instruct a lot of us at the Beginners Level of Paddle Power. It was a fantastic experience for everyone that took part, and they each received a certificate. Some of our Youth Members presented the team with gifts to show our gratitude.

Andy and Jackie were also called up to receive a thank you gift for running the Dance Class, and for raising £15 for this years chosen charity (Warwick Hospital’s Neonatal Unit) in the process.

The Dragons Den contestants were each given a bottle of wine (apart from the inventor of the drinks can disguise, who was given some cans wrapped in tape!) for being such good sports.

There were two winners of the Bonus ball; and the Colouring Competition was won by Lola in the under 5 year’s category, Luke from the 5-8 years entries, and Ellie from the entrants aged over 8 years.

Three Lucky Programme Numbers were drawn out to win hampers, made up from donations, including June’s: Her hamper was returned to her because she had apparently donated a box which concealed, hidden at the bottom, the famous Brocklehurst trophy that she keeps trying to get rid of! Better luck next time June!

Talking of which-this week’s winner, chosen by the audience from several daft nominations, was Andy Tain: He won it for reportedly returning to his caravan late Saturday night, taking his son back in the pushchair…only to discover when he got there that his wife Georgina had already put Benjamin to bed earlier and he had got the WRONG CHILD !!! Fortunately everyone eventually ended up with the correct offspring!

Good night campers

Moat House Inn, Alcester

Friday 21st-Sunday 23rd August 2009

Stewards- Allan and Marion Davis

A small booked meet in the back garden of a lovely old Pub: What more could we ask for? Add to that a reunion after summer holidays spent in various locations, as well as some sunshine, and we had a perfect weekend.

The Pub was an ideal location for catching up with news and having a laugh Friday evening. It was also the obvious place to stop for refreshments after popping along the road to Broad Lane Caravans on Saturday! For those of us that didn’t need any spare parts, or want to look  at the  new caravans, sitting around in the sun was more appealing! It was even warm enough to fill a paddling pool for the kids to have a splash around.

Despite being great weather for a BBQ (at this time of year you never know how many more barbeques you are going to be able to do before the weather changes!) most of us opted for the more effortless option of trying out the Pub Restaurant Menu. I think I can safely say that nobody regretted it. Around twenty five of us were seated in a room which we had all to ourselves, complete with wide screen T.V, and were well satisfied after our superb meals. Apparently the Pub is haunted by friendly ghosts, but fortunately they allowed us to eat our meals in peace!

At coffee morning on Sunday we congratulated Jenny, who recently reached the age of 8 years, for sleeping outside her Parents unit in her own tent (Big sister Lizzy is now in the Youth area for ages 12 years and over). This weekend’s stewards Allan and Marion were presented with a bottle of wine, and June Roberts was called up to receive the Brocklehurst Award in the absence of any other nominations!! Diane then requested it be presented to Dave for not realising that J.P Chenney wine bottles are SUPPOSED to be bent at the neck…at which point June saw an opportunity to pass on the former trophy (a sort of vegetable tureen) which had been retired from circulation into her PERMANENT care not long ago!! Nice try June!!

Temporary Holiday Site,

Binton Social Club, Binton, Stratford

11th July-8th August

As Steve, Sam, and I recently took ownership of a new Jack Russell puppy we decided to delay our main summer holiday until August this year. Of course we couldn’t stay away from a campsite field for long, and found ourselves heading for the NWDA Temporary Holiday Site in our own area, at Binton near Stratford, for a weekend.

We were greeted by Stewards Pete and Maureen, who reported that they had been busier than last year. There was certainly a healthy splattering of caravans, motor homes, and tents when we arrived.

Despite a lot of rain earlier in the day, we were lucky enough to enjoy a very mild and dry evening which enabled us to sit on the terrace of the social club to partake in a pre dinner drink; and to gaze up at a star studded sky with an after dinner drink later.

On Saturday we drove round to Wilmcote to hop onto one of the open top Sight Seeing Tour Buses for an expensive ride into Stratford! At least we saw some places of interest along the way that we had not seen before even though we live ‘on the doorstep’!

On Saturday evening it simply wouldn’t have been camping if we hadn’t had a BBQ, along with most of the other people on site.

All in all we enjoyed a relaxing and peaceful weekend…apart from being bombarded by music and search lights from Global Gathering at Long Marston until the early hours of Sunday morning! Good job we didn’t need to be up in time for Coffee Morning!

Many thanks to Pete and Maureen for acting as stewards at our temporary holiday site again this year, despite bouts of ill health. We wish them both well.

The Volleyball Meet

Thurs 9th-Sun 12th July 2009

Ashdene Farm, Drayton Bassett

When it comes to volleyball I am no expert, so rather than pretend to be I decided to report on the event from a layman’s point of view. After all I had never before been to a volleyball meet, and had no chance of trying to work out who was playing who in what division on any one of the volleyball courts!

Of course being an NWDA member I had recently been caught up in the excitement of hosting this event for the first time, and found I couldn’t wait to experience a volleyball meet for myself.

On arrival Friday evening I wasn’t surprised to find the entrance well signed and to be met by smiling Marshalls, efficient Stewards, and a very professional looking programme (this is NWDA). The field looked great with tidy rows of caravans, little groups of tents, and a large marquee-all centred round nine volleyball courts. I noticed a few members putting in a little last minute practice, and pondered for a moment on the dramas that could unfold over the weekend on the silently awaiting courts.

Volleyball teams could be registered over a drink in the marquee bar Friday evening; then it was early to bed for an early start to the tournament the next morning.

During the brief opening ceremony Saturday morning a minutes silence was held in memory of Sue Trowman, former Chairperson of The Volleyball Meet, who passed away last year. The day was then spent watching all the teams compete in the three divisions; including the ladies, the over forties, and the Youth teams.

As a breather from cheering on your favourite team, or to dodge the showers, you could wander round the trade stands, have a go on the raffle and tombola, and spend some pennies at the tuck shop or in the bar. There was even a ‘corner shop’ just in case you had run out of basic supplies.

On Saturday afternoon there was plenty to keep the kids entertained from games and colouring in the marquee to a Foam Party followed by a Cheerleading class. And it was a relief that the heavy rain that had been forecast didn’t arrive until 7pm when all the outdoor action was over for the day! I just wished we hadn’t already lit our BBQ! For those that hadn’t got that far there was always the food van or Adrian the farmer’s delicious home grown pig- roasted to mouth watering perfection and served in a bap with stuffing and crackling; that is if you could banish from your mind the image of the pink piglets over at the farm! However, once all fed from one source or another, most of us took shelter in the marquee for the remainder of the evening and had a great time relaxing, dancing and having a laugh.

Despite a few hangovers plenty of people were up early Sunday morning to support players in the remaining matches. The sun shone for a while and although it had gone before it was time to watch the first division final we were glad it didn’t actually rain. At least we had our Cheerleaders to brighten up the day.

The all important(to some!)results

The closing ceremony was introduced by NWDA Chairman Steve Kenning, who began by thanking the many people involved in putting on this meet. The following winners were then announced:-

Colouring Competition under 5’s…Summer French

Colouring Competition over 5’s…Hannah Harris

Colouring Competition over 11’s…Katie Buchannan

And finally a little medal was presented to each of our Cheerleaders.

The meet was then formally closed with three cheers by Robert Loudham, Director General of The Camping and Caravanning Club.

Was I glad I came to The Volleyball Meet despite being neither knowledgeable nor interested in the game? OF COURSE I WAS!

It was a fabulous weekend with plenty to do whether you played or were a spectator; teams to join whether you were an expert or a novice; lots to interest you whether you liked volleyball or not; and lots to enjoy whether your team won or not.

So spread the word and join us again next year…but order some slightly better weather please!!

Fri 25th-Sun 28th June 2009

Sports Field, Brailes-near Banbury

I am so glad we didn’t take any notice of the people who warned us that thunderstorms had been forecast for the WHOLE weekend. I am also glad that we weren’t put off by the torrential rain and flash floods that we drove through and left behind in Birmingham Friday tea time! The weather in Banbury was glorious ALL weekend!

Despite the mist that settled over the field after sundown Friday it had been a mild and pleasant evening devoted to eating, drinking, and sitting around chatting in small groups.

On Saturday morning we awoke to the sun shining over the flat and open field. We found ourselves suddenly very appreciative of the rolling hills, trees, and green fields of the surrounding Warwickshire countryside.

By the time we had tried out the play area at the other end of the field, walked through the picture postcard village, and stopped for a lunchtime drink in the garden of The George Hotel (a real ale pub) we had begun to realise how much this area has to offer. There is a butcher, baker (and NOT a candlestick maker!) as well as a newsagent across the road from the site; a large and historic church, and public footpaths within walking distance; as well as buses running through the village. Places such as Banbury, Oxford, Leamington, Warwick, Edge Hill (famous for its battle, and more recently for The Castle Pub) or Stratford would also be near enough to drive to.

However the weather was too unexpectedly lovely for us to want to do anything other than BBQ and spend another warm evening sitting around on this occasion!

On Sunday morning Sam (7) and Molly (9) helped Chairman Steve with announcements as we all sat out in MORE sunshine and warm weather. The Brocklehurst award was expected to go to Min, as June wasn’t present this weekend, but instead was presented to Glenys Barrow. In a debate over whether or not their solar panel was working, when her husband said it must be because he could hear it humming ( he SO nearly got the award himself!) she actually agreed that yes she could hear it too!  Darren and Jayne were then presented with a bottle of wine as a thank you for stewarding this lovely weekend.

Having spent the rest of the day basking in the sunshine we finally returned to Birmingham in the same weather conditions as we had journeyed there in… RAIN!

Fri 19th-Sun 21st June 2009

Brookleys Farm, Bidford on Avon

SOME optimistic people had predicted a hot weather weekend, so on that front we were disappointed; but from every other point of view our expectations were exceeded. This became a weekend of happy gatherings.

From Friday afternoon onwards we welcomed a steady stream of weekend holiday makers. Members came from several DA’s (Worcester and Hereford, East Worcester, Coventry, Leicester, West Midlands, and of course North Warwick’s) totalling 30 units in all.

Once set up we all spent a lovely evening eating, drinking, wandering around the farm, and catching up with old friends.

On Saturday morning the weather was promising to begin with, but as the day went on we were reaching for more and more layers! However it didn’t stop a crowd of us driving along the lane to the centre of Bidford on Avon where The Frog, a pub by the river, was having a day of live music in the garden. This proved to be well worth braving the occasional shower for, and we only just made it back to the site in time to take part in a Pub Crawl with a difference:

Everyone had been given the name of a genuine Pub, which then had to be illustrated in a drawing alone and displayed outside your unit. We then went round each others units and had to write down what we thought the Pub names were. Some of them were obvious, and some of them were not! Some of the drawings were also works of art, and some of them were not! Either way it created a laugh and got people circulating. Many thanks go to Andy Flear for organising this brilliant quiz.

After that entertaining interlude most of us enjoyed a BBQ, followed by a slice of cake to celebrate Charlotte gaining her University degree.

Coffee morning announcements were made by Shaun Roberts, who reminded everyone of forthcoming events, and wished all the Dads a Happy Father’s Day. Chocolates were presented to the winner of the Pub Crawl Competition - Tracy (of Crap Cardigan Fame!) who correctly named 21 of the 30 pubs and to Steve Francis for the best artwork with his interpretation of A Hole in the Wall. Other pub names included The Sozzled Sausage and The Famous Virgins and Castle.

Now, despite June being NOMINATED for the Brocklehurst Award AGAIN this week, it was awarded to our other regular ‘offender’ Min. She regrettably referred to the sucking of a sugar lump as "like an orgasm", rather than an organic experience!

Mark and Diane were presented with a bottle of wine as a thank you for stewarding, and just as coffee morning was closing there was an extra treat in store for us:

The RED ARROWS suddenly appeared from nowhere, flying in formation, fairly low overhead! They released a smoke stream that we would like to think was for OUR benefit but was MORE likely to have been directed at the neighbouring Gliding Club! Unfortunately Steve was unable to photograph any of it because he had just sent Sam off with the camera to take photo’s of the farm ponies!

Central Counties Regional Meet

Woodbine Farm, Grandborough Fields, Rugby

11th-14th June 2009

Hosted this year by Coventry District Association

Whoever chose the dates for this year’s Central Counties Meet must have had advance notification of the weather forecast because the weather LAST weekend couldn’t have been worse, whereas the weather THIS weekend couldn’t have been better. The sunshine was the final ingredient needed to make a perfect Regional Meet. Plenty of people must have thought so too because around 250 units were finally in residence for the weekend-some having been there since the working party set themselves up in the pouring rain the previous weekend. It wasn’t long before we were all settled in and ready to participate in an action packed programme.

From the live band Impossible Dream on Friday evening to the Opening Ceremony Saturday morning, then the volley ball heats being played most of the day- as well as the Mardi Gras during the afternoon, not to mention the band 80’s Affair in the marquee Saturday evening, followed by the Sunday morning Service of Celebration, the very energetic Team Games and Volleyball final, to the Closing Ceremony Sunday afternoon I think I can safely sat that a great time was had by all!!

The colourful Mardi Gras was won by Northants DA in the larger groups category, who depicted the West End Musical Les Miserable. Our own DA members won the smaller groups category with Saturday Night Fever; The Horace Ringrose Trophy, presented to the winning team in the family games, was won by Coventry DA this year; and the Stan and Edna Williams Cup was awarded to the winners of the Volleyball contest-our very own team from NWDA, who beat Notts DA in the final. Well done to all.

Any spare time in between taking part or cheering on various teams (whilst sampling any of the refreshments available from one or two of the catering outlets on site) could be spent perusing the various Trade Stands, where several bargains were purchased, or having a go on the inflatable equipment.

During the Closing Ceremony, before the presentations were made, many people and organisations were thanked for their contribution to this meet. We were proud to note that our own NWDA member Darren Bishop (originally from Coventry) was thanked for producing all the artistic signs and trailer decoration. Various people also took to the stage to advertise various forthcoming events; including our own Chairperson Steve Kennings, who was there to promote the  Volleyball Contest that we are excited about hosting for the first time this year at Ashdene Farm, Drayton Bassett from 11th-13th July. This year’s meet was then officially closed by Liz Stringfellow, the Central Counties Regional Secretary.

Once the generators had been turned off and the large inflatables had gone home, some of us hung around for a little longer as the field gradually emptied. We were determined to make the most of the glorious sunshine and really enjoyed relaxing for a while longer. It wasn’t until then that we realised what a remote and peaceful area we had been occupying. You couldn’t hear ANY traffic, and by the end of the day there were very few signs remaining of what had taken place over the past week. Maybe the neighbouring sheep will hear the ghostly echoes of laughter and cheering for a few more days to come!

22nd-31st May 2009

Rhayader, Wales

Although we love our Warwickshire countryside it was refreshing to once again leave Birmingham behind us as we journeyed through Staffordshire, then Herefordshire, to Rhayader in Wales.

After only a couple of hours the rolling hills and impossible to pronounce sign posts indicate that you are nearly there. And as soon as you spot a majestic Red Kite (of the feathered variety) souring above you, you no longer need your Satellite Navigation System to inform you that you have reached your destination.

Rhayader, in the heart of Wales, is an historic Market Town. It is situated in the Upper Wye Valley 700ft above sea level and nestles among the peaks of the Cambrian Mountains. The small town centre has all the shops that you need for essential supplies (BBQ meat, beer, wine etc!), as well as a Pub for every occasion! It provides an ideal base for outdoor activities such as bird watching, mountain biking, pony trekking, walking, and fishing. The town is also the gateway to the spectacular beauties of the flooded Elan Valley. Its pure waters were discovered by the Victorian mayor of Birmingham, Joseph Chamberlain: Desperate for a safe water supply he led an ambitious scheme to flood the Elan and Claerwen valleys with a series of dams, piping water 72 miles to Birmingham.

Our NWDA Temporary Holiday Site is situated at Gigrin Farm, just outside the town centre. We occupy a field that overlooks the farm and town, and has a hill rising behind it. The farm is a well known feeding station for the magnificent Red Kite Birds of Prey. Once almost eradicated from this Country, their population has been restored in mid Wales thanks to the dedication of the family who own the farm. Now hundreds of these very impressive, large birds can be seen congregating overhead every day at 3pm as they wait for Chris to deposit a trailer load of red meat near to the many bird hides. Visitors (including T.V crews) come to the centre from far and wide to witness the spectacular sight of so many Red Kites (and crows) swooping down to feed. We felt privileged to be surrounded by them all week.

So what else did we all get up to? Well some of the activities that we or other people enjoyed included…walking various stretches of the river Wye; paddling in and picnicking by the river Wye; walking, cycling, or driving around the Elan Valley Trail and Visitor Centre-which covers more than 16 miles in total and takes in breathtaking views of the dams, reservoirs, waterfalls, and hills; visiting Gilfach Nature Reserve and discovering the restored and very old traditional Welsh Longhouse; driving to nearby towns Llandrindrod Wells and Bluith Wells, or further afield to the coastal town of Aberystwyth(40 miles away); popping into one or two of the many local Guest Houses for an expertly prepared Cream Tea; taking part in activities at the local Leisure Centre; visiting the Welsh Royal Crystal centre on the edge of town; sampling the food or drink at various public houses; sitting around making the most of the sunny weather we never imagined we would be lucky enough to get!; and following the Farm Trail up the hill( having sat looking up at it all week!) to sit on Jackie Patterson’s Memorial bench near the summit and admire the views.

Talking of summits-we are very proud to report that a group of our members travelled over 90 miles to trek to the top of mount Snowdon in order to raise money for this year’s charity Neonatal Care at Warwick Hospital. I understand they rose well over £1000. Well done to all our mountaineers and to everyone who sponsored them and put money into the collection boxes on site.

And finally- I was going to mention that although we did not intend to make any Brocklehurst Awards (it would have hardly seemed right without June there!) it wasn’t long before we had a classic example of one: Georgina was dashing around the field, frantically searching for Benjamin who had suddenly gone missing, when someone pointed out that he could be heard calling from their bathroom for Mummy to go and wipe his bottom!: However, during an evening when we were all sat together around a camp fire on the banks of the river Wye, Chairman Steve Kennings had a list of further nominations for the Brocklehurst Award; and we voted for Paul Bratt, who had swam several lengths of the swimming pool before realising that his mobile phone was in his swim shorts pocket!!

Once again another action packed yet relaxing holiday spent in the company of our wonderful NWDA members; and yet another stunning place for us to aspire to retire to.

Hampton House, Kineton

15-17 May 2009

This weekend could best be summed up as wet and windy, yet lots of fun. The whole weekend was probably saved by the accidental foresight of the landowner who had recently erected one of those large party marquees; complete with carpet, heater, garden chairs, and a three piece suite! So although the Bowles Contest was cancelled due to bad weather we had a luxurious place to gather Friday evening, were able to have a party for Megan’s 3rd birthday Saturday afternoon, held an Allan Davis Musical Evening Saturday night, and had somewhere to take shelter for coffee morning on Sunday. Amazingly the marquee was still standing by then; which is more than can be said for some people’s canopies and awnings!

Despite the terrible weather forecast almost thirty units joined us for a potentially peaceful weekend. Peaceful, that is, apart from the howling wind!

It was interesting to imagine this huge field full of caravans, and the enormous barn decorated, for our May Day Bank Holiday event next year: Definitely a date for your diary, and one when we shouldn’t need to turn anyone away due to lack of room.

Between rain showers some of us did manage to get out and about into the surrounding Warwickshire countryside: The places we visited included Wellesbourne village, Wellesbourne Market, the picturesque village of Combrook, historical Compton Verney, Charlecote Park, and the many well maintained public footpaths in this beautifully wooded area. Another location we shall aspire to retire to!

By Saturday evening, after so much time spent relaxing, most of us were quite happy to sit back and enjoy Allan’s music whilst our Youth provided the floor show. It was energetic and entertaining, and some of us joined in from our seats!

At coffee morning it was announced that Mary had won the Bonus Ball, Stewards Jan and Aneel were presented with wine as a thank you for stewarding this weekend, Allan (and roadie Ted) were thanked for a great night of music, and nominations for the Brocklehurst were Steve, Ted, Diane, and Jayne (which also involved June). Jayne was the overwhelming winner (probably due to the fact that it also involved June!) because when June kindly escorted Jayne back to her caravan Saturday night, giving her a gentle shove up her steps, Jayne passed wind (not the words Steve used!) in her face!! It certainly WAS a windy weekend in more ways than one!

May Day Rally

Heathcote Farm, Warwick

Fri 1st-Mon 4th May

As we missed the Easter Meet to go and stay with my Dad in Spain, and couldn’t attend last years May Day Meet because of a christening in Oxford, Steve and I were really looking forward to this Bank Holiday weekend.

We arrived at Heathcote Trout Farm Thursday evening along with some other NWDA members who needed to be ready for the site to open at 10.00 Friday morning.

Rumour has it that chief Marshall Andy Tain was actually up and ready with his clipboard at 5.00- which may have been a little early, although campers certainly did start to arrive from the time that the site opened; and didn’t stop all day. They were efficiently pitched by a well briefed team of Marshalls so that by the end of the day the field was full of neat rows of campers all ready for a weekend of fun to begin.

As a warm up to the fun filled programme of entertainment promised over the weekend we started with a quiz in the marquee at 9.00 on Friday evening. The winners were the Twirlers.

On Saturday afternoon the sun was shining, as ordered, for the Penny Fair. Stalls included-fruity cocktails for sale, various table top games, penalty shoot out, the human fruit machine, jewellery for sale, tombola, raffle, refreshments, and a cake stall. There were also promotional stalls for our IOW holiday site, and our Youth Sections. Afterwards there was time for members to practise their skills for the Talent show, and have a BBQ, before the crowds flocked to the marquee for Britain’s (or rather North Warwick’s) Got Talent.

As excitement mounted in the marquee we were firstly introduced to the judges: Enter Amanda Houlden (Jayne Houldey), Simon Cowell (Steve Cattan), and the Regional Chairman’s wife VIP Jean Brown. The Acts that followed left us all astounded as they impressed us with their various talents: Lisa sang the dramatic song My Immortal; Mike Ashcroft sang Any Dream Will Do, accompanied by the children in the audience; Kimberley and Michaela sang a Taylor Swift ballad; Molly, Gracie, and Lottie did a dance to Michael Jackson’s Bad; Liam and Lisa sang and played Happy Ending; Shannon moved many of us to tears when she sang Hero; and Lewis along with his brother Ross did an unbelievable Break Dance.

An Intermission gave the Committee the chance to auction some of it’s members as slaves, to be put to work for an hour the next day: Irene Reynolds won Steve Kennings; Regional Chairman Larry Brown won recent recruit Angie Frume; Lorraine bought Mr Fix it Gary Bratt (maybe he would be able to fix Bobby the dogs bad haircut!); and treasurer Aneel Khanna was bid strongly for by his stepdaughter who wanted HIM to do what SHE wanted him to do for a change! More about how they got on later!

The talent show continued with an energetic Salsa dance from Andy and Kaz; a comedy act called The****Cardigans, who gave us all a laugh; Linda Pulley sang the lovely song Desperado; brothers Kieren and Joshua (aka Brassed Off) got us all on our feet; and finally Georgina-who had just returned from a family wedding in Southampton-mesmerised us all with her rendition of Wind Beneath My Wings.

The judges decided that the top three acts to go through to the final would be Shannon, Georgina, and Lewis & Ross. They each performed again and the audience reaction awarded third place to Georgina, second place to Shannon, and first place to Lewis & Ross. Well done to everyone who took part, and thank you for keeping us all entertained.

After the events of Saturday night, the smell of bacon and sausages cooking in the marquee was just what we needed to lure us out of bed ready for Sunday morning’s famous Awning Sale at 10.00. Many bargains were available, and some went home with the weekends costs covered. An auction followed in an attempt to make a few more sales.

During the afternoon Steve captured on camera the ‘slaves’ working for their Masters. As far as we can make out Chairman Steve, and Treasurer Aneel (who by the way had to put the fee in himself!) got off fairly lightly having to perform some household duties and a massage; whereas Gary found himself being dressed up in women’s clothes to do the WHOLE families washing up before having to take all THREE of their dogs for a walk around the field! As for Angie…she had a lovely time sat drinking tea with Larry Brown!

Family Games were available for those feeling energetic enough Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday evening many caravan doors were locked, with curtains closed, as men made themselves (with a little help from their women no doubt!) ready for the much waited for Miss Mayflower Contest. Their efforts were revealed a short while later as they were each introduced to a panel of judges in the marquee. We saw entries from Victoria (aka Lloyd), Lulu Rose (aka Neville), Bubbles (aka Andrew), The Ugly Sisters (aka brothers Paul and Gary), Chloe (aka young Callum), Mr & Mrs (aka Tony Nash and Caz Roberts), and finally Mr Mayflower Contestants Callum & Alex (aka Grainne and Shannon). The judges pronounced that the winner of this year’s Miss Mayflower contest was…Lulu Rose. Her Agent will be taking bookings for guest appearances!

On a very chilly Bank Holiday Monday we needed to retreat in to the marquee for Coffee Morning. Chairman Steve informed us that 93 units had attended this weekend, with members joining us from as far afield as Worcester & Hereford, Teeside, and even South Africa! We are also pleased to note that 19 Youth were camped in the youth area and as always all our younger members were very well behaved.

Next years May Day Bank Holiday Meet is going to be held at Kineton, near Stratford, which can accommodate many more units.

Thanks were made to the committee and their friends and family for all their hard work in putting on this event as well as to all our guests who entered the various contests.

Money raised over the weekend is as follows:-

CCJ £135

CCY £90

Charity Fund £80

DA £130

The Bonus ball winner was Lisa Nash, Guess the weight of the cake (made and donated by Faye Nicklin) was won by D. Taylor, the person who correctly guessed where the IOW treasure was buried (Osbourne House) was Roy Pulley, Samantha guessed the name of the teddy (Derek, her Dad’s name!) and Andy Nicklin and Jan Wardle both guessed how many sweets were in the jar.

A prize was awarded to Friday evening’s Quiz winners, and contenders for the Brocklehurst Award were read out: The nominees were…June (who thought she had seen the last of it!), Tracey (****cardigan), Jan, Andy Tain, Carol, and Grainne & Amy. The audience unanimously decided that Andy should win it for going up to the ambulance that had been called for someone (don’t worry, he was fine) as it arrived on the scene, then proceeding to explain the situation to who he thought was a paramedic sat in the passenger seat of the ambulance, before realising that it was actually Mark Nicklin sat there because he had met the ambulance at the gate then had a lift back across the field!

Steve went on to thank this weekend’s stewards Trevor & Mary and John & Judy (who were glad to receive a bottle rather than another umbrella!) as well as Keith & Ann Bratt who had not yet been thanked for stewarding our AGM meet at Rowington Village Hall.

Callum’s ticket was drawn out to win the Sweet Tree, which had been donated by Tony & Lisa and raised £64; then many more lucky children won prizes from the children’s raffle. The adults raffle concluded coffee morning…apart from one last laugh:

June was the owner of the LAST ticket to be drawn, and the remaining prize on the table was THE BROCKLEHURST TROPHY that she had sneaked on there earlier! It would seem she will never be able to get rid of it!

Now take a look at the pics

Friday 24th-Sunday 26th April 2009

Binton

Twenty eight units turned out for what proved to be a peaceful and relaxing

weekend. The weather was mild and mostly sunny, with rain only putting in an appearance before most of us were up Saturday morning.

During the weekend some of us frequented the on site social club (some more frequently than others!) whilst others popped into nearby Stratford to do a spot of shopping, or drove out to places such as Bidford-on-Avon, or engaged the kids in an impromptu game of football.

On Saturday afternoon we had reserved a place in front of the wide screen T.V in the social club to watch Birmingham City play Preston - but the least said about THAT the better!

On Saturday evening the breeze of the daytime had died down, and the clear dark sky reminded us of one of the reasons we enjoy camping so much. Someone even saw a shooting star!

Unfortunately, on Sunday morning, we were also reminded of one of the things we DREAD about camping… the Brocklehurst Award!! It is the moment during coffee morning when we ALL wonder whether or not we have said, or done, anything silly! This weekend it was awarded to our Chairperson, Steve Kennings, for desperately trying to get the football match back on to the T.V (Michelle had switched it to a more female friendly channel!) by frantically pointing the remote control at the screen – only to find that the Sky sensor was BEHIND him in the bar!

The weekend ended by thanking Youth Leaders Andy and Ruth (and Megan of course) for stewarding; and by reminding everyone that although we are looking forward to next weekends action packed May Day Bank Holiday Meet, it is actually now fully booked.

Friday 20th-Sunday 22nd March 2009

Meadow Furlong, Aston Cantlow

Spring was in the air: Well, during the daytime at least. At night and early morning winter made a return visit and it was VERY frosty!

Anyway, most of us felt the need to get out of the cold and go for a warm through in the local Social Club Friday evening – where we were invited back the next day for the England v Scotland Rugby match. Of course it would have been impolite not to go! To complete the night Tony welcomed us back on site later with home cooked chips. Mmmmmmmmm!

Otherwise, on Saturday, everyone had their own way of making the most of the wonderful spring sunshine…whether it be shopping in nearby Stratford, walking, relaxing on site, or nursing a sore head from the night before!!

The dust was also blown off a few barbeques as we enjoyed the first one of the season.

As most people seemed to have retired to bed early Saturday night, many were early to rise on a glorious Sunday morning, ready for our first coffee morning of the year: Or maybe they had been woken by their children eager to bestow them with their Mothers Day gifts which had been secretly stowed away somewhere!

Chairman Steve, and his family, drove out to the site to make announcements at coffee morning as we sat outside in the sunshine; and the first award of the year was made to Mark Leivers for being unlucky enough to have opened out his map just as a large bird flew over with the need to relieve itself!!

Happy Mother’s Day; and wishing you all a pleasant and memorable season of camping.

AGM

Saturday 28th February 2009

Rowington Village Hall

For those of us that had booked to camp in the grounds of the village hall for the weekend, the weather was forecast fair for our first outing of the season. Nevertheless it was a little TOO cold for spending any time outside once the sun went down; which is why we just HAD to spend the evening in the very inviting Social Club over the road!

But that didn’t stop people rising early Saturday morning to ‘set the scene’ for the forthcoming AGM.

As always it was lovely to greet old friends at the start of a new season, as they arrived ready for the AGM to begin at 3.30pm.

Proceedings were opened by Chairperson Steve Kennings, who began by welcoming Larry Brown (Camping and Caravanning Club Central Counties Regional Chairman) and his wife Jean. Next we took a minutes silence to sadly mark the recent passing away of members Ivan Fisher, Cyril Larden, and Fred Williams.

On a more cheerful note we were delighted to also welcome Laura Rainbow (Camping and Caravanning Club Magazine Reporter) and Kenneth Fear, accompanied by his Guide Dog Rascal. Kenneth had been invited along to receive a cheque, on behalf of the Guide Dog Association, for £3,666.07. This amazing total was achieved by the hard work and generosity of all our members, who organised or attended a number of Fund Raising Events throughout the year. We will now be able to name and sponsor a Guide Dog Puppy as soon as he/she is born, and will of course keep members informed. Kenneth gave his sincere thanks.

Steve’s report also included a run down of the many positive aspects of being involved with NWDA, reminding us all what a fantastic year we have had.

One AMUSING bit of news worth reporting is that the famous Brocklehurst Award is being retired, to be replaced by another (featuring a steering wheel with a ‘past’!) Watch this space!

And an IMPORTANT piece of news to report is that the Volleyball Meet is being taken over by NWDA, who will be hosting this well known Annual Event at Drayton Bassett (site of the Regional Meet hosted by NWDA in 2007) in July.

Steve concluded his report by thanking all the committee, and their families, for their hard work and continued support.

Individual Committee Members reports followed, giving information on each aspect serving on committee. We heard from Treasurer Aneel Khanna, Sites Officer Mark Nicklin, PRO Jayne Bishop, Social Secretary Sarah Edwards, Youth Leader Andy Nicklin, CCJ (Camping Club Juniors) Leader Charlotte Leivers, Regalia officer Gary Bratt, Holiday Sites Officer Jan Wardle, and Charity Coordinator Jayne Bishop.

The Election process was then explained to us by Secretary Lin Kennings, and elections made. The main changes this year are that Sarah Edwards decided to step down after doing an excellent job for the past five years; and Angie Frume and Andy Tain were nominated to join the committee.

A welcome refreshment break was taken at 4.30, after which the new committee was confirmed.

Nikki Wardle was presented with a trophy (given annually by the Buckley family in memory of their son Andy) for all that she has contributed during her time in the Youth Section. ‘Hoodies’ were also given out to Dale Bratt and Sam Nicklin (not present) who passed their Youth Tests a few months ago.

Finally Larry took to the floor to thank everyone for their continued commitment, to congratulate us on being the new hosts of the Volleyball Meet, and to request that we remember to vote for Regional Councillors when election papers next arrive in the magazine!

After being teased by the tempting aroma of baked potatoes cooking all afternoon it was finally time to queue up and choose a filling to mark the end of Sarah’s reign as Social Secretary, and to quieten our rumbling tums!

Needless to say they were delicious.

To round off the day the new committee enjoyed a relaxing evening discussing ideas for the coming season, and ‘initiating’ Angie!!

Sunday finished off the weekend in true camping style, with a cooked breakfast and a walk (well for a couple of us!) to Baddesley Clinton.

We are all looking forward to joining everyone on the field for what we trust will be another great season.

See you all again soon.

 2009 Chairman's Dinner

This years Chairman’s Dinner was held at the Drayton Manor Banqueting Suite, and was well attended as normal. Twelve North Warwick's went along and arrived in great spirits, looking beautiful and all determined we were going to have a great night.  The six course meal was served and it was all gorgeous. The host begin to worry, when the Evening entertainment didn’t show up!, Drayton Manor soon came to the rescue by calling in their resident DJ who was in, set up and booming out great disco tracks in no time. After such a feast, we were all ready to hit the dance floor and dance the night away.  North Warwick's yet again received fantastic support from the Regional and National Councillors, including the Director General of the Club Robert Lowdham, who specifically mentioned our forthcoming Volleyball Meet  in his opening speech.  As the guests started to dwindle away, the NW table were still dancing away and having a great time.  The finale of the night came, when the Dirty Dancing track “Time of my Life” came on, and the Jennifer Gray / Patrick Swayze’s famous moment of the lift, was so amazingly replicated by Mark Leivers, Steve Kennings lifting the very graceful, Ade Houldey into the full lift. The remaining guests were in hysterics, and even more so, as Mark Leivers went a tumble on a jacket that was left on the floor, and Ade came tumbling to the floor.  Another great night with North Warwick's DA.

NWDA on Tour for New Year

Earlier in the year some North Warwickshire members booked to join Worcester & Hereford District Association for their Christmas/New Year meet at Yew Tree Farm, Pound Bank, Far Forest, Bewdley. We didn’t know then what a treat we were in store for:

The day after Boxing Day we left the remains of Christmas at home, dragged our caravans out of winter hibernation, and headed towards the Shropshire border.

After setting up and eating left over turkey for lunch we were DELIGHTED to find a VERY INVITING Pub (of the ‘award winning’ variety) just the other side of the gate. Several hours later, thoroughly warmed by the roaring open log fire, we tumbled out into the darkness to be dazzled by a field full of caravans lit by twinkling Christmas lights and decorations. It brought a tear to the eye!

After tea (turkey curry, of course!) our next ‘wow’ moment came when we entered the marquee. We had heard it would be heated and had a solid floor, but weren’t prepared for the red and gold drapes, coloured lights, silver ballroom globe, starry night ceiling over the dance floor, or rows of decorated tables-each reserved for different groups of guests. From that evening, and for the next four evenings, the stage in the marquee was taken over by top class entertainment.

The first band we saw was Back to Back, followed the next evening by a Commitments style band called Commandments. Sister Act took the stage Monday evening, and Ballroom Glitz provided music from the seventies for a special evening Wednesday. Plenty of people turned out in their 70’s gear for a night of fun.

Top of the bill has to be RedShed (kept secret until the night) who shared the stage with the WHDA DJ’s on New Years eve. But before they appeared we were all made to feel like VIP’s when we were formally introduced to everyone else as we entered the doors of the marquee in our ‘glad rags’. Everyone had smartened up their tables and loaded them with party food. Some time was then spent posing for photographs, as well as introducing the Camping Club Youth. The scene was finally set for what turned out to be a fantastic New Years Eve Party. RedShed had a few surprises up their sleeves, or rather under their clothes, but as far as we know everyone saw the funny side. They were definitely The Full Monty!

Needless to say tears of emotion were shed as the clock struck midnight, and the partying continued for a while longer!

The entertainment didn’t all happen at night: There was a great children’s party Monday afternoon, which featured a Circus Entertainer who had lots of circus equipment for the kids to experiment with afterwards. Santa made a special appearance bearing gifts for all, followed by party food.

There was also a Coffee Afternoon Wednesday, for those that weren’t too busy making themselves beautiful for the party, and rumour has it there was more than coffee in the cups!

For anyone wanting to embrace the great outdoors the surrounding countryside provided stunning walks, made even more breathtaking by the frosty weather. The Wyre Forest has a Visitor Centre nearby, with even more routes to walk.

For those more interested in shopping than rambling, it wasn’t too far to drive to Bewdley or Kidderminster. If we had planned to (or spent less time in the pub!) we could also have chosen to go to The Severn Valley Railway or the Safari Park.

So, we returned home with lots of photographs, lots of warm memories… and a list of what to take for next year!

NWDA would like to say a big Thank You to WHDA for making us feel so welcome and for making it a New Year to remember.

Happy New Year

Christmas Party

Saturday 6th December

Shirley Community Centre

By 6pm the room at The Shirley Centre looked calm, warm, and inviting. Before long it was alive with the sounds of children chatting and laughing as they added their own warmth to the festive atmosphere.

The children’s entertainer kept them professionally enthralled for an hour until it was time to welcome Santa; who soon had them following him around the room and forming an orderly queue ready for the handing out of gifts.

As always Santa’s room looked fantastic; especially the fireplace which was cleverly created with the help of a DVD TV and some lights.

As you will see from the photographs, the children’s reactions to Santa varied . . . but I don’t think he made anyone cry this year! As usual he also made time to ALLOW a few attractive young ladies to sit on his lap! And a very large Elf aka Paul Grummet!

Our younger party goers then enjoyed their own specially plated buffet tea before taking part in a few games on the dance floor with Ade Houldey.

Meanwhile the room was merrily filling with people joining us for the rest of the evening. It was lovely to see friends old and new after the camping season has ended; particularly wearing sparkly clothes (this years dress theme was ‘a splash of red’) instead of fleeces; and high heels instead of wellies!

The adults buffet was a real treat, and as we enjoyed the superb food a few announcements were made by Chairman Steve Kennings: Committee members were publicly thanked for their individual contributions to this evening, as well as for all their hard work throughout the year; Darren Bishop (non committee) was thanked for designing and making Santa’s stage set; Sharon Noakes presented a cheque for £150 to this years chosen charity Guide Dogs for the Blind; this years Temporary Holiday Site Stewards were given recognition for their commitment-of which George and Faye Nicklin as well as Trevor and Mary Whitehead were in attendance; and Andy Tain’s name was drawn as winner of free membership next year.

To end announcements the large grisly bear that joined the NWDA committee at our recent Charity Race Night, and made a special guest appearance tonight, was BOUGHT back into the family it was donated from, raising MORE funds for Guide Dogs for the Blind . . . much to the delight of its youngest member!

Formalities over, and food digested, we were ready to continue with the party by dancing the remainder of the evening away to music provided by our own DJ’s Shaun and Aneel.

All that remains to be said is . . . MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL.

NWDA'S CHARITY NIGHT.

Charity Race Night

Knowle British Legion

15th November 2008

"And they’re off!" was what Ade shouted each time the dogs were released from the traps to chase a stuffed hare around a track. Were we at Hallgreen Dog Stadium? Do I mean the cute Labradors whose photos appear on our title page this week? No: We were at Knowle British Legion Club betting on greyhounds as they appeared on screen for a Charity Race Night in support of Guide Dogs for the Blind.

NWDA members as well as their friends and families turned out for an action packed evening of entertainment which included an almost continuous slide show of photos showing what a great time we have had camping this year, an auction, and a raffle.

But first of all the races took place: Ade Houldey was dressed for the occasion and had obviously been practising his Race Commentary. There were five races sponsored by various organisations that are listed later. Bets were placed with the girls at the desks then the deafening sound of everyone cheering on their favoured dog filled the room…followed by groans of disbelief if it had been ‘pipped at the post’! Many could have gone home a little wealthier-but being a charity night any winnings were put back into the next fundraising event.

Before enjoying the delicious and welcoming buffet, Chairman Steve Kennings invited Sharon Noakes onto the stage as she had prepared some fundraising packs to help us: The packs involved selling 25 pool squares for £2 each so that when a winning square was drawn £25 would go to Guide Dogs for the Blind and the remaining £25 could be spent by the winner on PartyLite products. Needless to say these were soon snapped up and the proceeds will be added to our total later.

After eating and building our strength up again we were ready for The Auction. The room was once again filled with riotous noise as people fiercely competed to put in the highest bids for each of the fabulous items on offer. In the end Molly got her giant fluffy Guide Dog puppy (not a real one!); Alan ’Lofty’ Davis will soon be enjoying his Porsche 911 Driving experience; John and Carol Copperthwaite won a professional family photo shoot for their son and his partner; and Edmund Styles walked away with a yummy novelty Guide Dog cake.

Amazingly there was enough time and energy left for a Raffle and a Disco. The raffle prizes included hairdo’s, jewellery, confectionary, a shoe voucher, alcohol, manicures, pedicures, head massage, a carvery meal, and of course a cuddly toy.

Throughout most of the evening our special guests-two trainee Guide dog pups and a working Guide Dog with his master-had received lots of fuss and attention. They were impeccably behaved and coped very well with the noise and heat.

We did have another special guest, who also behaved well, in the form of a large grizzly bear that was KINDLY donated to us by the Eustace family. He adorned the stage all evening and we put £50 into the charity funds to adopt him as our Mascot; although I am not sure which committee member will be offering him ‘board and lodgings’ between star appearances!

We are also very grateful to the following businesses for their sponsorship and auction and raffle donations:

The Shoe Box, Knowle; Dream Driver Days, Henley-in-Arden; Knowle Travel; Premier Medical Centre, Knowle; Signature Photography, Henley-in-Arden; The Cake Boutique, Knowle; Toni’s Gents Hairdressers, Knowle; Katie Joyce Costume Jewellery, Knowle; Knowle Traditional Sweet Shop; Knowle Photography; Theo Georgio Hairdressers, Knowle; and the Wilsons Arms Toby Carvery, Knowle.

Finally a BIG thank you to Jayne Bishop (Charity Events Organiser) and all the committee, their family and friends, who played any part in making this event such a success.

WE RAISED  £870.35 DURING THE EVENING; so well done and thank you to everyone for your generosity.

Please check our Charity update page to see if we have reached our goal of £5000 to sponsor and name a Guide Dog.

Halloween Meet

Friday 31st October-Sunday 2nd November

The ‘Haunted’ Stables at Wilmcote

The weather may have been cold, but the atmosphere was hot. NWDA’s fifth Halloween meet was even bigger and better than ever before.

The gates opened at 10 a.m on Friday and the haunting began. It wasn’t long before spooky scenes were appearing around the creepy campers units.

By the time it was dark excitement was mounting as everyone prepared to be scared almost to death as they anticipated this year’s ghastly Ghost Walk. Each of the five different groups of ghost walkers were first invited into the marquee for a warming cup of hot soup before watching a haunting dance performance by our Youth Members, featuring Ade Houldey, to introduce the theme of Ade as Rif Raf from the Rocky Horror Show. Our journey of fright and fear then led us around the undergrowth by Mary Arden’s house, where we almost jumped out of our skins as ghouls and monsters leapt out of the darkness when we least expected them to! We eventually arrived at a freaky and deserted Train Station, where the Ticket Office held a few devilishly disgusting ways of making us search for coins in order to be able to board the Ghost Train! Once aboard we were promised a ride through a cave of Lost Souls; but when the power went down we found ourselves having to walk through a very dark and scary labyrinth of blood thirsty experiences. It was not for the ‘faint hearted’! The air was alive with the sound of screaming! The cup of mulled wine that awaited us in the marquee was needed to calm the nerves as we all shared our most terrifying moments!

Saturday morning saw the youth team up early to provide a Creepy Kids Corner in the marquee, and during the afternoon more activities were on offer to keep the children busy until it was time to start putting on costumes and make up ready for the evening.

In the meantime the Hells Kitchen staff caused us to have to evacuate the marquee for a while when the baked potatoes caught fire. Fortunately the blaze was soon under control with no harm caused to either people or potatoes!

By 5.30 some wicked Jack-o-Lanterns had appeared at the front of the marquee to be judged, and everyone’s ‘little monsters’ were dressed up ready to go ‘Trick or Treating’. As we travelled around the field in groups, knocking on caravan doors, it was a great opportunity to admire all the fantastic decorations that had been put up.

By 6.30 everyone was chilled to the bone and ready to return to the marquee to talk about who gave out the best treats, and to take part in the Kids Fancy Dress Parade. William won the boys contest and Rebecca was chosen from the girls.

Hells Kitchen was then open for us to choose a mouth watering filling for our baked potato, and I must say it was the best baked potato I have ever tasted. The adults Fancy Dress Parade followed, with John winning for the men and Anita (from Holland) being the ladies winner.

The Devils Disco continued into the night, with our legendary Scotchmen putting in an appearance to raffle some Scotch Whisky. The many costumes people wore ranged from ghostly to ghastly, and from skeletons to spiders. As witches, Draculas, monsters and much more wearily returned to their units before the bewitching hour we knew they would all sleep well…until their nightmares began!!

On Sunday morning the committee arose early to cook breakfast, which was available from £1 a sandwich, and this led into the closing announcements led by our Chairman Steve Kennings.

Steve began by telling us that 119 units had attended, then thanked the many people who had been involved with planning and preparing the meet-including the marshals, the booking in team, Ade and his Ghost Walk participants, the catering team, and the people who had put on activities for children. A prize for the best dressed unit went to Carol French; and Josh won a prize for the best Jack-o Lantern. There were several Bonus Ball winners, and Holly was picked from all the correct ‘find the ghosts’ competition entries. Another Holly won the under 5’s colouring competition, Mia won from the age 6 to 9 age group, and Ben won a prize from the over 10’s.

A presentation was made by David (Regional Youth Liaison Officer, and National Youth Chairperson) and Marlene Wilkes to our CCY (Camping Club Youth) members Sam, Dale, Grainne, and Amy who recently passed their youth tests. We also took the opportunity to officially award Grainne the Andrew Buckley Trophy that she was chosen to receive earlier this year.

The forthcoming Winter Youth Rally was mentioned as well as a Charity Race Night at Knowle British Legion on Saturday 15th November. We are also looking forward to our Christmas Party on Saturday 6th December.

The opportunity to raise some money for this year’s chosen charity Guide Dogs for the Blind arose when Tony and Lisa donated a very large and very cuddly Eeyore. He was auctioned for a final total of £30, so thanks to everyone who was involved with that.

As coffee morning drew to a close amidst the mud and puddles in the marquee we all had a good laugh at this weekend’s Brocklehurst Trophy nominations: The first was for Min (again!) who thought ‘white coffee’ was made by leaving out the coffee; the second was for Jayne and Georgina who had arranged to go shopping, said to each other they would meet in the car when they were ready, and each emerged after 15 minutes from their OWN cars to find out where the other one was!; the third was for Geri who spotted what she thought was her husband in HER costume, thumped him as she accused him of putting on the wrong costume…then found out it was somebody else altogether!; and the fourth was almost for Geri’s husband Gary for causing the baked potato fire by helping it along with PETROL; but it was decided we should award it to his Dad Keith for trying to put the fire out with WATER! Maybe Keith should have taken a Youth Test like Grandson Dale did!

The children’s and adult’s Raffle followed with many lucky and happy winners.

The steward’s were thanked and Ade stepped up to also thank Steve for working non stop to help make this such a monstrously memorable weekend: They are probably already planning next years!!!

Moat House Inn, Alcester

10th-12th October 2008

The weather this weekend simply couldn’t have been better for one of the last camps of the year. It was welcoming to arrive in sunshine Friday afternoon and to travel home again in sunshine Sunday afternoon; not to mention the warm sunshine we enjoyed in between. However we couldn’t forget it was autumn once the sun went down because it was VERY cold then. Thank goodness for the pub!

This new site was actually the back garden of the Moat House Inn, near Alcester, and we managed to fit 25 units on to it. It was a 5 minute walk along the road to Broad Lane Caravans, a short drive away from Alcester village and nearby Ragley Hall; and just a few miles away from Redditch town centre. Of course with a pub in OUR back garden, and an England match on T.V Saturday afternoon, some decided there was no need to leave the site at all!

So… the men enjoyed the pub, the Landlord enjoyed the extra income, the women enjoyed the sunshine, the children enjoyed building dens, and the millions of Money Spiders that we shared the field with enjoyed the company(maybe!). It’s just a shame they didn’t bring us any luck with The Lottery so we could have returned to buy one of the caravans we had been admiring at Broad Lane!

Coffee Morning announcements included a mention that Mick and Min will be stewarding our Meriden site from Wednesday to Sunday to accommodate campers visiting the NEC Caravan and Motor home show; Jayne, Jayne and Caz will be at the show on Saturday 18th on the Camping and Caravanning stand; and Stewdards Trevor (NWDA Vice Chairperson) and Mary were presented with their umbrellas. Rumour has it they now have so many they will be able to open a shop!

And finally-the winner of The Brocklehurst Trophy, from several worthy nominations, was Ade Houldey…for two reasons: firstly a cooking utensil that he left by the hob caught on fire so someone shouted to him "look, there’s a fire in your van"…only Ade thought they were joking and simply replied "yeah, yeah"… before turning round to see that it WAS true!: and secondly for giving us all a laugh by falling asleep in his chair late into the evening, when some called him and caused him to jump so that he tipped his glass of wine down his neck! Paul Grumett (I finally checked how to spell it!) will be pleased it wasn’t HIM this time!

We now look forward to our famous Halloween Meet (fully booked), a charity Race Night at Knowle British Legion on Saturday 15th November, and our Christmas Party at Shirley Community Centre on Saturday 6th December.

Look out for further details.

Conkers and Pancakes, Studley

26th-28th September 2008

Having missed being able to camp the last two weekends I was delighted with the way the weather was turning out Friday; and so were four of our Youth Members who were about to take their Youth Tests (although they probably weren’t looking forward to the weekend as much as the rest of us were!) More about how they got on later.

The glorious weather meant we were not surprised to arrive to a fairly full field Friday evening. Everyone was in good spirits and some of the girls enjoyed an evening of ‘girly chat’ while the lads went off to a local Pub. It may have been a sunny day but I bet they were a lot warmer than we were!

Saturday morning the weather was as fabulous as it had been the day before. Plenty of people were caught on camera relaxing and enjoying the welcome sunshine that has been so scarce all summer! In fact we had to drag people away from their easy chairs to compete in our annual Conkers Contest at 3p.m. However once ‘in the swing’ of it the usual competitiveness rose to the fore and we soon had our finalists for Sunday morning.

Between all the fun some of us managed to pop along to peer over the rope to see how the Youth were getting on under test conditions. I was a bit concerned to find Jayne on the floor at one point…until I realised she was being a ‘dummy’ for the First Aid part of the test!

Many people chose to BBQ for what could possibly be the last time this year; making sure we left enough room for pancakes in the marquee later.

The smell of the pancakes cooking soon tempted most of us into the marquee and a great evening of dancing followed. We paused part way through the evening to wish Kerry and Kath Happy Birthdays.

Sunday morning turned out to be even hotter than Saturday, which was ideal for Coffee Morning and a ‘play off’ between our finalists in the Conkers Contest. Gary Bratt and John Williams battled it out –with John being the victor. Brothers Lewis and Owen were the kids finalists, and were eventually declared equal winners because they had been playing for quite long enough! (at least, being brothers, they could easily share the prize!)

Pete Gromit won the Bonus Ball, and Tracy Kemp was voted winner of the Brocklehurst Trophy: She had been spotted early in the morning filling her aquaroll, without remembering to remove the cap; and then tried to cover up this oversight by saying she was washing some mud off!

And finally…after the formalities of coffee morning were over we all applauded the four Youth Members as they did a ‘walk past’ carrying all their Kit to complete their test. They returned a short while later to hear the welcome news that they had all PASSED. There is a lot to learn in preparation for the Youth Test, all of which must be successfully demonstrated over the duration of the Test Weekend. Needless to say we are very proud of them; especially as they were praised for their impeccable manners.

Chairman Steve thanked David Wilkes (Regional Youth Liaison officer and National Youth Chairman), and his lovely wife Marlene for conducting the test; then the kids presented them with a thank you gift. Youth Leaders Andy and Ruth, Assistant Youth Leaders Shaun and Caz, and Ruth’s Dad Bernie (a former Youth Leader) for coaching our young candidates.

Congratulations and WELL DONE to Dale, Sam, Grainne, and Amy xxxx

Kineton

After the bad news during the week that Greenhills was cancelled due to a waterlogged field, our Mr Greengrass Sites Officer, grabbed the opportunity to try out a new site at Kineton. The forecast was in our favour and we all arrived on site in glorious sunshine. This weekend was planned as the mock test for the 4 CCY members who will all be doing their CCY Test at Studley over the 26/27/28th September weekend.

The site was gorgeous, with fantastic views of Warwickshire countryside. By the time most of us arrived, some of our keen committee members had been off site to fetch the trailer out, which by Sunday became full of everything our team built for Halloween 08.

Saturday morning bright and early, some of the guys went off to collect some promised timber from Jewsons, who agreed to support this years Halloween in the form of as much timber we require to build the frontages for this years marquee. Many on site were waiting around keen to help where they could as soon as the timber arrived and Ade and Darren shared their plans for making this years Halloween displays even bigger and better. Those not so handy with the tools, took the opportunity to go off and visit Wellesbourne market which was just a short drive away. By tea time on Saturday the new frontages were built and painted, including a full size Grim Reaper, standing proud above the gate.

The four CCY members doing their mock, spent all of Saturday polishing up on their knowledge for their test next weekend. We were very lucky to have Bernie and Marie to support them and give them solid training and support in all the modules involved.

Saturday night brought us the pleasure of having Alan & Marion Davies putting on a great disco evening in the marquee. Everyone enjoyed a good dance, and some party games, for both the kids and the adults.

Sunday morning, was again a glorious sunny morning, with the men all keen to make the finishing touches to the frontages, before dismantling it all, and storing it away in Storage ready for Halloween. Coffee morning was able to be held outside, hosted by our weekend Stewards Keith and Anne Bratt. Steve thanked Bernie for all his support, and Bernie explained a little about what the CCY had been doing and what was involved. The brocklehurst nominations were read out, which included Min, spraying her caravan with what she thought was fly spray, but it turned out to be Oven Cleaning Foam!. The cheers were all well in favour though of it going to Andy Nicklin, who proudly built up his little Megan's new Dora Scooter, complete with shopping basket on the front, only for everyone to point out he had screwed the basket on upside down. Andy tried to justify his actions by explaining there were no instructions, but even the kids noticed the picture of Dora on the basket was upside down!!!!! Nice one Andy.

No one wanted the end of the weekend to come, with glorious sunshine, a great new site and momentous team camaraderie throughout the weekend. Roll on next weekend at Studley.

Annual Fishing Weekend

The Riddings Fishery, Atherstone

5th-7th September 2008

Although I don’t quite understand why grown men would want to sit on a box in the cold rain for 6 hours waiting to catch some fish, only to return them later; or their women would brave the rain to go to Asda, stand under a dripping gazebo to prepare baguettes for lunch and deliver them to the pool side; then finally pop along to show support during the weigh in and help carry all the gear back…but that is exactly what we did do this weekend! (and have done for years!)

It didn’t actually rain ALL weekend, but there was very LITTLE let up. We ignored the messages of concern from friends and family who thought we were barmy to be going camping, and by the end of the weekend most of were glad we had.

Friday evening the rain held off long enough to get set up and greet each other, then the Fishermen headed off for an early night (to dream about catching that elusive ‘big one’)ready for an early start Saturday morning.

Once the men had been packed off to the fishing pool it was lovely to have a bit of time to ourselves before it was time to prepare and deliver the baguettes for lunch.

Soon after the weigh in had begun it was obvious it was going to be difficult to beat the fisherman who had netted a very impressive 71 ld of fabulous looking fish. I was beginning to see the allure! Well done Fred. The contest was now on for second place, which was finally awarded to Kevin, who also netted an impressive catch.

There was some time left for some of our CCY (Camping Club Youth) members to practise their cooking methods in preparation for their Youth Tests in a few weeks time. Some wonderful aromas were soon wafting across the field. As there wasn’t quite enough to go around, and having a BBQ wasn’t an option, most of us then had a Chip Shop Supper. Mmm!

Although it had rained heavily all night, Sunday was dry enough (if a little muddy!) for us to sit outside for Coffee Morning. Steve Kennings came (he had been to a wedding Saturday) to make announcements, and collect his daughter who had spent her first weekend in the CCY. Shields were presented to the winning fishermen aswell as to Dale as the Junior Winner. Fred very kindly asked that his cash prize be donated to our charity for this year Guide Dogs for the Blind. Many thanks go to Fred.

And finally there was NO contest for the Brocklehurst Award THIS week as it could ONLY go to June(again!): She went to visit her brother-in-law (who lived nearby), walked through the door, removed her shoes and coat as she called out "put the kettle on", and went into the living room to be met by a complete stranger. She asked who he was, he did the same, and it turned out that her brother-in-law had moved house a year ago! It could take a long time for her to live that one down!

NOW SEE THE CATCH

Hoar Park, Nuneaton

29th-31st August

Lots of people had listened to the weather forecast and turned out for what promised to be a pleasant, relaxing, and quiet weekend. We don’t think they were disappointed.

The first treat for some of us came when Ade and team cooked a delicious curry Friday evening. Unfortunately the peace and tranquillity WERE temporarily interrupted after our Sam decided to try one of the more spicy ingredients. It wasn’t until half a pint of milk, a bottle of water, a wet flannel, and some time later that he started to calm down!

On Saturday Hoar Park Craft Village had a Fun Day, which made up for the fact that we weren’t doing a Children’s Weekend (as we had done as a ‘one off’ at this meet last year). There was a Prize Stall, bouncy castle, roundabout, harness trampoline ‘ride’, food van, clowns, balloon art, donkey rides, static falconry display, and races. There are also craft shops, an adventure playground, a children’s farm, and fishing pools (in case anyone wanted to put in a little practise for our annual fishing contest at The Riddings, Atherstone, next week)

Saturday evening saw most of our barbeques in action, manned mainly by our men. Then for pudding there were Lin and Lucy’s birthday cakes! It was lovely to be able to sit outside in the evening, approaching Autumn time (we know it is Harvest time because we could hear the farmer working very late into the night Friday!) without getting cold.

Sunday morning we had a good turnout, in the faint sunshine, for Coffee Morning. Steve Kennings, our Chairman, started by informing us of the very amusing Brocklehurst Award candidates this weekend. He gave us some time to ponder over the most worthy winner while the Raffle was drawn: Having done that the Trophy went to Caz and Lisa for selling raffle tickets to just about everyone on site when there were actually NO prizes to be won! The bad news was the committee had to produce some prizes very quickly, and the good news was we raised nearly £50 for this year’s charity Guide Dogs for the Blind.

By the way the runner up for the Brocklehurst Trophy was the man who received an electric shock to his bottom THREE times before realising that the fence next to where he was pitched was an ELECTRIC fence!

Also at Coffee Morning we wished Sue (40), Lin, Lucy and Jo Happy Birthdays; announced that Lucy and Jo had spent their last nights in the CCJ (Camping Club Juniors) as they reach the age of 12 years this week and will qualify to join the CCY (Camping Club Youth); and June advertised Halloween for us!

Bank Holiday Weekend

August 22nd-25th

Evesham Olympics

All our ‘contestants’ were welcomed into the ‘Olympic village’ and given a programme telling them which colour team(blue, black, red, yellow or green) they could earn points for over the weekend.

Our Olympic weekend was ‘officially’ opened with a moving Torch Procession from the ‘Stadium’ around the field. Refreshing cups of Punch were then served as we arrived back at the marquee. As always it was lovely to sit around, exchanging news of recent holiday destinations with friends, and having a dance together again.

On Saturday the children were invited into the marquee to take part in an Olympic themed Colouring Competition; followed by the main Olympic Games-with events to suit all ages. Fortunately the weather was pleasant enough, and remained so as we took ourselves back in time to ancient Greece and dressed in sheets for a Toga Party Saturday evening: Sam won a prize for the children’s Fancy Dress, and the adult winner was Bob. A great time was had by all as we danced the night away!

Sunday morning the children were still dancing as they attended Charlie’s Dance Workshop in preparation for the Closing Ceremony Monday.

Anyone with any energy or strength left could then enter the Volleyball Tournament. The rest of us were more than happy to provide an audience!

A little time remained to take a walk along the river to watch the professional Anglers competing, and visit the Fishing Exhibition and Craft Marquee. Well, some of us made it as far as the Beer Tent!

However we all needed our wits about us to enter the Quiz Sunday evening; set under the categories of Geography, History, Sports, General Knowledge, and Music. And it wasn’t easy! But we could all let our hair down afterwards and dance away any remaining energy.

Monday, once everyone was served and seated with their great British Cream Tea we were treated to a dance choreographed by Charlie and the Youth members. It had rhythm, ribbons, and gymnastics; with children’s ages ranging from around 4 to 14 years. Well done kids.

Our Chairman Steve Kennings then began Coffee Morning announcements by thanking, individually, ALL the committee and associates who had helped with ANY of the weekends planning or events.

76 units from various District Associations chose to join us this weekend; and among them Riley (4), Kieran(12), Steve(45), and Steve K(48) celebrated birthdays; and Tony and June celebrated 40 years of marriage.

Certificates were awarded to Lewis and Molly for sleeping on their own in their tents for the first time; also to Lottie, Tom, and Lizzie for joining the CCJ (Camping Club Juniors). As Jack reached the age of 12 last week he has now graduated to the CCY (Camping Club Youth)

Prizes were awarded to Betty for the age 5 and under Olympic Colouring Competition; to Molly in the 6-10 age group; and to Kieran for his entry in the age 11 and over category.

Individual awards in the Olympic Games went to Jack, Lizzie, Tony Nash, Chris Reynolds, and George.

The Volleyball Tournament was won by Sam’s team with Kieran, Lizzie, Jack and Matt.

Elizabeth won the Monopoly Quiz handout, Sarah Edwards and Tony Nash won the Football cards, a nice lady from West Mids D.A won the hamper, and lots of people won raffle prizes;-

But the over all Evesham Olympic Games winners of the Gold medal were the RED team, represented by team leader Ruth. The Silver medal, awarded to the GREEN team, was collected by Paul; and the Bronze medal was collected by Tony for the BLUE team.

We think EVERYONE was a winner for their admirable contributions to the whole weekend.

AND FINALLY, just before stewards Mark & Diane and Steve & Lin were presented with NWDA umbrellas- Lin (sporting a heavy bandage, which wasn’t due to sports injury as you may have expected this weekend, but was incurred whilst walking the dog!) was voted winner of the famous Brocklehurst Trophy for signing a guest in who had JUST been introduced as Mr Timmins BROTHER, then asked what his surname was!!

Tour DA France

As mentioned in the IOW write up, a small group of friends who also make up some of the NWDA Committee chose to venture over to France for our holidays, on our very own "Tour de France". Ade spent many a winter evening selecting a suitable site, which would cater for all our needs. He chose through Carefree "Mane Guernehue", in a little village called Baden in Southern Brittany. We went in two groups, four families going the first weekend (Bishops, Kennings, Nicklins and Tanes), and four more families following on a week later (Houldeys, Roberts, Leivers, Wardle/Khanna).

Our "Tour" began with a stop over night with Solent DA in Portsmouth, in preparation for our early morning ferry from Portsmouth to Cherbourg. The crossing was 5 hrs. Our venture really began as we drove of the Condor Ferry, and hit the roads on the "wrong side" for the first time for some. The drive took us 6 hours allowing for two short stops. The journey was great, the roads in France are far less busy than what we are used to.

The site was great, it had all the facilities we required, although very French. Not much allowance is made for the fact that there are a number of British holiday firms on there, not one announcement; poster or sign was in English. Luckily we had Georgina Tane with us, who speaks French beautifully.

The holiday bought a mixed bag of weather, mainly dry and warm although not always Sunny. We spent most days, chilling by the pool, exploring little villages and of course eating and drinking the local offerings.

The middle weekend of our holiday the other families of our party arrived. We welcomed them on site, with the NWDA flag flying and a BBQ all ready to serve up for them.

The last weekend of our holiday, we left Brittany and travelled up to Normandy to another Carefree site in the grounds of Chateau Martragny. Here we stayed for the weekend, we spent a very enjoyable and most educational day around the sites of the D-Day landings. We took in the largest English Cemetery and Ranville, followed by Pegasus Bridge, The Mulberry Harbour, Aramanche Beach, the USA Cemetery. Finishing with some Retail Therapy around Bayeaux and of course a nice coffee in a French Street Café.

Sunday morning was the end of our "Tour de France" we all packed up and headed for Cherbourg which was now just over an hours drive away. We boarded the Condor Ferry, on not so calm seas and headed home. All very proud we had done it, and reflected on a "fantastic" two weeks holiday. Although just a little bit jealous that the rest of our friends were still on site in Southern Brittany for another week!!

Isle of Wight 2008

Thanks to George and Faye Nicklin who steward this site for ten weeks every year, many people have once again chosen to spend their summer holidays at Whitecliff Bay, near Bembridge, for anything from a few days to a few weeks.

Although most of our NWDA committee took their caravans over to France this year, many other NWDA members returned to this memorable destination. We also welcomed members from lots of other District Associations.

For the Nicklin family the field will always hold special memories of holidays with Stuart, and since last year we now all have his Memorial Bench to sit on or gather around at any time.

The field we use for the Holiday Site is adjacent to two commercial sites, with access to the long sandy beach via each of these. There is also a bar/restaurant, crazy golf, shop, post box, launderette, and basic shower block within walking distance. A leisure Centre with swimming pool is a ten minute drive away.

As the Island is only 23 miles across from east to west, and 13 miles from north to south, ALL of the many attractions are within reach: There are typical seaside towns, quaint seaside villages, theme parks, many types of beaches, wildlife attractions, dramatic coastlines, coastal paths, seasonal events, pub’s, restaurants, and craft outlets to visit.

We made the most of much of the above, and particularly enjoyed going up St Catherine’s Lighthouse; and spending a day at the famous Cowes Regatta…even though we MISSED seeing Princes Phillip, William, and Harry by just a few minutes!

We have many happy memories of holidays spent at the NWDA THS IOW, and expect there will be many more to come.

42nd National Youth Rally 4th – 6th July 2008

Stanhope Showgroung County Durham

Well what can I say, a fantastically exhausting weekend was had by all. We started the weekend by heading off in a minibus with 7 of North Warwicks youth members, we also picked up a couple of other central counties youth along the way and met the rest of our region, a very respectable 28 in total, along with the other ten regions in the north east about 4 hours later.

Spirits were high throughout the journey and as we set up in the dark, the youth then all raced to the disco to meet up with old and new friends and although the music finished at 11 o’clock the youth did not, partying hard right though til the early hours.

Saturday was an early start with the opening ceremony followed by the sports, where we were responsible for organising our region’s teams – 5 aside football, volleyball and netball, with the North Warwicks youth entering into all events enthusiastically, some of which for the first time. However rain stopped play at lunch, which ment a late finish, however well worth the wait as we finished semi finalists in the volleyball, and runners up in both the netball and football, with the mighty Yorkshire reigning supreme (BOOOOOO).

We then cooked a well earnt spag bol for our ravenous youth, which went down really well. They then all went off to dress for the nights disco with an army theme, and boy they get into the spirit of things. We could feel another late night coming on.

A wet Sunday morning was another early start with the Austin trophy sports, however the rain did not dampen our spirits, as we came a brilliant third in difficult weather conditions.

Finally came the closing ceremony and a sad fairwell to friends and a really enjoyable weekend. Our thanks go to North East Region for a well organised weekend, David Wilkes National Youth Chairman and Central Counties RYLO, Paul and Chris Bratt, Coventry Youth Leaders and Karen and Chris, Trent Valley Youth Yeader, but most of all to the YOUTH. They were a real credit to us and we are very proud of them.

Aston Cantlow

Fri 27th-Sun 29th June

We were looking forward to returning to this new (to most of us anyway) site even though the weather forecast wasn’t good. The field was flat and mown (a relief after last weekend!) and as long as we kept our backs to the houses that overlooked one side of the field, the view the other way was miles of green fields and distant woodlands.

As for the weather, if you don’t expect too much then you won’t be disappointed: With that in mind we consider ourselves lucky to have enjoyed a very mild Friday evening, sitting around together outside (unless you were one of those that went to the local Pub to help celebrate Gary’s birthday), a day of sunny intervals Saturday, and a pleasant if breezy Sunday morning. Fortunately the rain held off until we were safely on our way home Sunday afternoon.

Some of the girls went shopping for holiday clothes Saturday…then made a return trip Sunday to buy the things they wished they had bought the day before! I was unable to resist the second time round and also came back with a Matalan bag full!

For those that like walking (a cheaper pastime than shopping in Stratford!) a public footpath was posted off one corner of the field, which we think must be part of The Heart of England Way… judging by the look of the many serious hikers that passed by.

The village of Aston Cantlow was also very pretty to walk through, with some historic buildings, a lovely church, and a pub. Yet another place we would aspire to retire to (not just yet though of course)

There were three Youth members camping out this weekend; all looking forward to next weekends National Youth Rally at County Durham.

They are planning to take their Youth Tests before the end of the year, so could be seen practising compass and map reading skills Friday evening with Youth Leaders Andy and Ruth. They also did some First Aid training Saturday morning and demonstrated to us how to put an unconscious person into the recovery position, using Paul as their ‘dummy’. He was obligingly very uncooperative! They were then taken on a hike by Bernie (Ruth’s Dad, and retired Youth Leader) which they seemed to enjoy. Gary, Tracy, and Dave also got the kids together for some team games Saturday afternoon. That was why the rest of us were quite ‘chilled’!

On Sunday morning Steve Kennings (our Chairman) and family arrived for coffee morning so that Steve could make the usual announcements in the way that he does so well. Mark (sites booking officer) and Diane, our stewards for the weekend, can be seen posing with their NWDA umbrellas; and Grainne was awarded the Brocklehurst Trophy AGAIN! She was in competition with Paul, who has won this prestigious award many times, but was voted winner by those present for believing Mark when he told her that she would get a better signal on her mobile phone if she held onto the canopy pole. What made it funnier was that she said "oh yes, that’s better" !

So as we all look forward to our main summer holiday, there remains one more Rally next weekend at Long Marston (we won’t actually be there so will try and persuade someone to forward us some photo’s) and then the Temporary Holiday Site at Binton begins. We also wish our volleyball team lots of luck in the contest in Cheshire that weekend. George and Faye Nicklin arrived safely on the Isle of Wight Wednesday and our seaside Holiday site is also now open. Some of us are looking forward to joining them there soon.

And finally…we hope you (and Mark who doesn’t now about this yet) enjoy looking at the photo’s of Mark taken Friday evening after relaxing over a bottle of Rum!

All in all a great weekend for chilling out, and enjoying some retail therapy.

Now take a look at the pics.

Hunscote, Wellesbourne

20th-22nd June 2008

They may have forgotten we were coming and only cut the grass the day before for the first time in two years; and the water may have been an uphill return trek and taken an hour to fill…but it would take more than that to stop US enjoying a weekend away!

The pleasant weather Friday was probably to thank for the final turn out of 21 units; and the local population of voles that a few of us spotted quickly decided to relocate! Jayne’s screams may have helped them on their way; or maybe it was the smell of curry coming from outside Ade and Jayne’s unit as they prepared one of Ade’s famous Chinese curries to celebrate Jayne’s forthcoming birthday!

Saturday morning saw most of us up early and driving round to Wellesbourne Market; returning later with bag loads of goodies ranging from cookies to cowboy hats!

The weather at that point was mild and sunny so most of us were ready for relaxing with an aperitif before lighting up those barbeques. We managed to eat al fresco before suddenly having to squeeze into Ade’s gazebo to shelter from the rain; or gathering in various peoples units. Wherever we ended up everyone seemed to have a fun filled evening.

Sunday morning many of us didn’t get the lie in we’d planned as we suddenly needed to be up to secure our own( or somebody else’s) awning in the high winds that had crept up over night. The strength of the wind was unbelievable and didn’t let up all day.

Once everything was secure, and we had gathered together for coffee morning with stewards Mark and Michelle (who can be seen receiving their NWDA umbrellas) some people headed for home, Ken and Christine went into Stratford to watch their son competing in the well known Raft Race (in aid of Multiple Sclerosis) and some hang around to see the Vulcan Bomber that resides at Wellesbourne Airfield being fired up at the Wings and Wheels Show.

So once again a relaxing but fairly eventful weekend that none of us will forget. The voles and their friends will probably be talking about it for ages!

Central Counties Regional Meet

June 13th to 15th 2008

Lyndon Top, Rutland Water

Hosted by South Lincs DA

The site opened on Thursday, but for those of us that arrived after work Friday evening there was still enough time to enjoy some Country music in the marquee later.

Saturday morning we needed to be up bright and early for the Opening Ceremony, and the start of the Volley Ball Competition in the Main Arena. The volley ball heats had just about finished when the sunshine made way for a sudden downpour and everyone had to run for cover! Fortunately the sunshine made a come back in time for the Over 55’s Sports to take place, followed by the Mardi Gras at 4pm-which was a relief to most of NWDA as we were wearing grass skirts!

The theme for the Mardi Gras this year was NAUTICAL FUN, and there was plenty of that with entrants including our own interpretation of Hawaii Five O; Trent valley’s CCY Surfers; a Pirate Ship; some Deep Sea Fishermen; a Dragon Boat; The Vikings; and Noah’s Ark. I think Popeye even put in an appearance! The overall winners were the Vikings from Trent Valley DA.

The weather stayed fine enough for us to BBQ, and then it was time to head back to the marquee for what turned out to be a great evening: HICKSBILL BOMBERS, a rockabilly/rock n roll band were really good and by the end of the night nobody wanted the party to end.

There was a Sunday morning Service for those that wanted to attend, followed by fun filled Family Sports and the Volley Ball Final. We were delighted when our own Volley Ball Team made it through to the final along with Notts DA, and are very proud to say we reigned as Champions after an

excellent match. Well done NWDA.

The Closing Ceremony started around 1.pm with speeches and presentations. Prizes were then awarded for the different categories of the Mardi Gras, the Horace Ringrose Family Sports, and the Volley Ball.

Coventry DA took the stage for a while to promote next years CCRM which they will be hosting at Woodbine Farm, Granborough Fields, Rugby. The theme is West End Musicals and titles were drawn for each DA to present in the Mardi Gras.

We have been given Saturday night fever to depict, so we have almost a year to work out how we are going to do that. Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

The ceremony ended with the traditional Raffle, and many useful prizes departing with their new owners.

Rhayader 2008

23rd May-1st June

For those of us that endured the torrential rain and gale force winds of the Bank Holiday, and were able to stay all week, the reward was worth the wait: The fair weather days did eventually outnumber the bad weather days.

The top field at Gigrin Farm was once again well populated with an assortment of tents, caravans, and motor homes from various districts.

We had a very enjoyable week, with friends old and new, and hope everyone else did too. Some of the activities we enjoyed the most included watching from the bird hides, as hundreds of Red Kite birds of prey appeared out of the sky, to be fed at 3pm daily from the farm; driving around the beautiful Elan Valley past the reservoirs and dams; getting out to explore the unique and diverse countryside there; or going into the Visitor Centre to find out a bit more about it all; going on a Bug Hunt and Pond Dipping excursion with two Rangers from the Elan Valley; swimming and other activities at the local Leisure Centre; shopping in Rhayader or nearby Llandrindod Wells; walking along part of the river Wye, with its pebbly shores; having a picnic at one of the many picturesque Picnic areas; and ascending the hill that rises behind the site to do an annual inspection and weatherproofing of a bench that was placed up there in memory of a former NWDA member.

Other Day Trips that people told us about included a drive to Aberystwyth and a journey on a mountain railway; a trip to the seaside at Newquay; and sampling some of the many local walks or cycle rides.

Of course we all at some point enjoyed a drink or meal at a few different pubs, of which there seem to be many in Rhayader!

Whatever we had done each day it was always lovely to get together later to exchange news, sometimes sat around Steve and Lin’s Fire Bowl; because however warm it had been in the day it was still rather chilly during the evening!

Fri 16th-Sun 18th May 2008

Wilmcote, near Stratford Upon Avon

Bowles weekend

This weekend the weather was so unsettled it felt like we experienced all four seasons in one: It was Spring on Friday, Winter on Saturday, and finally Summer for a little while on Sunday! We even had a sprinkling of fallen leaves on top of our canopies.

Still, those that wanted to barbeque managed to; and the Social Club did well from those of us that sought shelter there! We were also grateful to them for opening up especially for us to watch the FA Cup Final Saturday afternoon.

Luckily the rain did hold off until after the Bowles Contest had finished Saturday morning. There were plenty of contenders battling it out for the Trophy; with David and Pauline Lyons finishing as runners up to winners Mark Nicklin and Steve Davis. Well done to all who took part.

There were forty units on site this weekend: Some went into nearby Stratford, a substantial number of us went off site to Megan’s birthday party Saturday lunch time, three of our committee members(Lin, Jayne, and Charlotte)attended the Central Counties Regional AGM at Rutland Water Saturday afternoon, many of us had visitors, and a few simply relaxed.

It was lovely to wake up to sunshine Sunday morning so we could sit outside together for coffee morning at 11.00. A prize was awarded to competition winners Bernie, Marie, Phil, and Holly: Amy won the children’s Brocklehurst award for filling up her Parent’s aquaroll then rolling it back across the field having forgotten to screw the cap back on! Needless to say it was empty by the time she got there! Paul Gromet won the adults Brocklehurst AGAIN after he gave us a laugh by falling asleep with his drink poised ready in his hand, which then slowly poured down his neck! The Bonus Ball was won by Andy Nicklin, and Stewards Chris and Jenny Edwards were presented with their NWDA umbrellas..

Following the previous days Central Counties AGM we congratulated Charlotte for being awarded the prestigious Les Goodwin Trophy after she had been nominated for all her hard work in leading our CCJ(Camping Club Juniors) We are all very proud of her and partner Lee. All in all a quiet yet eventful weekend.

Heathcote Farm May 2008

Well it’s my first write up for NWDA so please forgive me if I waffle!! What a weekend we’ve just had at Heathcote Farm in Warwick. A great site with a lovely farm shop, and a trout lake for any keen fishermen. Friday was a busy time for the stewards and team with us reaching capacity of just over 120 units by early evening, sorry to all those we had to turn away. Once everyone was pitched many could get the b-b-q’s out and chill out for the evening, whilst the committee got everything prepared in the marquee for the following days events. (And what a fantastic marquee it was!)

Saturday was a lovely bright day just perfect for the penny fair & activities planned for the afternoon. During the morning some people took advantage of the good shopping centre near by, whilst others fished or relaxed around the site. The afternoon saw a hive of activity going on in the marquee from bottle raffles to face painting and a great cake stall (even if Jayne B’s cakes weren’t on there!) Outside people could play one of the many penny slot machines from the vintage museum or have a go at the penalty shoot out against Andy Nicklin, who made some quite spectacular saves! There was also a display from the Guide Dogs for the Blind which drew quite a crowd, but the highlight of the afternoon for me was the Tug of War. It started with the children (which ended up with everyone on the rope!), then came the men who I believe went away with a few rope burns, and finally the women who unfortunately lost to the children! Everyone then started to go back to have something to eat and get ready for the evenings entertainment.

‘North Warwick’s Got Talent’ was the theme for the evening in the marquee and what a great night we had. The acts included brass renditions, gymnastic displays, keyboard recitals and vocalists ranging from a rendition of ‘Mustang Sally’ (with some interesting backing singers)to a boy of 7 singing Beautiful by James Blunt (his dad had never heard him sing before and was fantastic). The children of the committee did a medley of songs from ‘The Sound of Music’ which made us all go ‘ahhh’ when Megan put her head on Hannah’s lap to go to sleep in ‘So Long, Farewell’. We had a great dance act and an amazing rendition of a Maria Carey song by Gill accompanied only by a backing track (Simon Cowell better get the record deal ready). Our judges, Amanda ‘Jayne’ Holden, Roger ‘Walsh’ Bishop and our very own Simon Cowell, had us all cheering and booing with them. The night finished off with a disco including some interesting pole dancing by Mrs Bishop snr and friends!!

Sunday was a packed day starting with the awning sale and followed by a great auction compared by our very own ‘Rant and Rec’ (from the night before), Steve and Ade. Steve did a great display of how not to ride a skate board and also tripped up the stage when his partner in crime had sold the step they were using. The sausage and bacon baps went down a treat and Steve Davis would have loved the granary and wholemeal cobs that were on offer.

Barbeques were had all round the field, with many having some lovely trout from those who had been fishing. (I was one of the lucky ones and I must say they tasted great.) Evening soon came round with the annual ‘Miss Mayflower competition being held. What a great sport all the contestants were especially Granny Mayflower complete with zimmer frame & colostomy bag!! The winner was Ade all the way from the U S of A, although I’m sure his accent changed to Geordie half way through. ‘Mr Mayflower’ was just as much fun with a special appearance from Caz dressed as Mark Nicklin which had us all in stitches. The winner was Tracey dressed as ‘Rob the Builder’ complete with dockers & builders bum. The night continued in good spirits as we all took part in a quiz organised by Gary Bratt followed by an 80’s disco.

On a sadder note we did have a lady on site who Unfortunately on Sunday night had a slight fire in her caravan but thanks to the rapid response of DA members this was soon extinguished and no damage was done apart from slight burns to her hand and a burn to Ade’s arm.

After a night where the rain never seemed to stop everyone was up and about ready for coffee morning. Many various awards were handed out from over the weekend and many raffle prizes were won. The ‘brocklehurst award’ award was won by the lady who had had the fire as no-one could remember anyone having such bad luck as her , it included her caravan door falling off and finishing the weekend with her hand wrapped and in a bag from her visit to the hospital after the fire!

And finally we would like to say Thank You to young Kiera who found a £20 note on the field and handed it in. When no one came forward after we  announced that it had been found, we said she could keep it. Kiera accepted on condition that we put half of it to Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Only a few needing towing out as the field started to empty. Well I’m sure you’re all bored of my waffling now(if you made it this far!) so all that is left for me to say is  that I hope everyone had a good weekend and see you all soon.

Binton

25th-27th April 2008

As Steve and I were not able to camp this weekend I wasn’t going to do a Write Up…but when I heard that Paul Gromet won The Brocklehurst Award for GETTING HIS ..... STUCK IN HIS ZIP I just had to share that information with you!

Lucky for him Andy and Georgina Tain, who took this weekend’s photo’s, didn’t get any pics of the delicate operation to free his ..... from the offending zip!

Grainne won the Children’s Brocklehurst for being convinced she had been talking to Trevor Whitehead in the Social Club…when he wasn’t even out camping this weekend!

Stewards Andy and Ruth were presented with their NWDA umbrella’s, in front of their lovely new caravan. It will be strange not seeing them in their tent anymore!

So, apart from Paul’s Tense Moment, all in all there seemed to be much Relaxing going on this mild weekend.

Cooperage Farm, Meriden: 18th-20th April 2008

We were surprised, but glad, we were able to go to Meriden this year as last year it was cancelled due to persistent rain making the field water logged.

It must have been a bit ‘touch and go’ this year too if the amount of rain we have had is anything to go by!

Anyway, around 12 units arrived Friday evening. We braved the chilly weather for a while until the twinkling lights from the Queens Head Pub across the field seemed to be inviting us to descend upon the unsuspecting locals!

Saturday morning was promisingly mild but by the afternoon the cold rain decided to put in another appearance and refused to go away. Once again the warmth of the pub seemed the only option! Unfortunately the camera didn’t accompany us on either occasion which is why there is no photographic evidence!

The Pub wasn’t the only pastime of the day: Some went to Jackson’s, some to Coventry, some to Solihull, and some went to Ikea… twice!

By the time we dragged ourselves away from the pub it was beginning to get dark and we were hungry enough not to worry about it being too cold to BBQ. Afterwards Mark and Di treated us to some exploding bananas cooked in rum and sugar. Mmm! Bernie and Nicola didn’t want to miss out on this treat, but couldn’t leave their girls in the caravan further up the field…so they simply hitched up and moved! Bernie probably wished he hadn’t bothered when he had a very close encounter with some ‘flaming’ bananas!

Sunday morning we just about managed Coffee Morning before the rain set in again. Stewards Mark and Di received their NWDA umbrella, and two prizes were awarded to the stewards competition winners.

Sam won the children’s Brocklehurst Trophy for falling out of a playhouse window, suddenly disappearing backwards mid sentence…which made everyone laugh. Eric Arglalis was awarded The Brocklehurst Trophy for forgetting to put the bung in before filling his loo-which resulted in a bit of a flood …much to his mates amusement!

All in all a wet but entertaining weekend.

Greenhill, Bearley

Friday 11th-Sunday 13th April 2008

Another weekend that threatened bad weather but turned out not too bad.

Around twenty units arrived to enjoy a pleasant Friday evening; with some of the lads popping off later for a customary drink at the Golden Cross pub at the end of the lane, while the girls caught up with the week’s news.

On Saturday the ‘lads’ worked very hard in the barn renovating our recently purchased horse box ( no we are not venturing into the equestrian world) which will give us extra transportation space for our bigger weekends. They completely replaced the rotten floor, rewired and repainted it. We think you will be impressed when you see the ‘before ‘and ‘after’ pictures.

The ‘girls’ did their bit by providing crusty bread sandwiches, sausage rolls, and cakes for lunch. There was still time for a little retail therapy in Stratford or a walk up the aqueduct and along the canal.

Many chose to BBQ Saturday tea time, despite a brief shower of rain earlier, and then we were heading into the barn for an evening of fun music provided by Allan Davis- ably assisted by roadie Ted Capper! We had a really good time and were sorry when the evening came to an end. In fact it didn’t quite end there because we needed to burn the old wood from the horse box; so a bonfire (and Marks trousers) was ceremoniously lit in a designated area behind the barn. We all had a warm then left a few ‘guardians’ to watch over it until the early hours.

Early Sunday morning we were horrified when we awoke to the sound of heavy rain fall; but of course, in true form, it had stopped by the time we got up and we enjoyed a reasonably sunny day.

Coffee morning and presentations were made in the barn. Our stewards Allan and Marion Davis firstly provided a free children’s raffle; so a few children walked away lucky winners. Then Marion and Allan were presented with their NWDA umbrella, as were Ted and Jan Capper for assisting all weekend. Georgina won the Brocklehurst Award for putting her oven on to preheat, having forgotten that she stored her washing up bowl in there! No need to tell you what happened to that! Spot the photo of Georgina’s melted bowl.

Mark Leivers went on to win the children’s Brocklehurst for doing something very childish with a petrol can and a fire: In fact I don’t think any of our children WOULD do anything so daft!

All in all a relaxing, fun yet productive weekend.

Ashdene farm, Drayton Bassett

Fri 4th-Sun 6th April 2008

This could be called an ‘all weather weekend’: It was mild with sunshine Friday; cold, wet, and windy Saturday; and we had a blanket of snow Sunday!

It was lovely to BBQ in sunshine for the first time this year on Friday, and sit outside for the evening without getting TOO cold.

On Saturday the weather was very unsettled, and deteriorated as the day went on. Most people at some point sought the warmth of their cars and popped out to Canwell Caravans, the Retail Park, or to place a bet on The Grand National. At 4pm Caz invited all the kids to Callum’s 3rd Birthday Party, at which point the weather was probably at its worse! But in true NWDA style everyone rallied round providing shelter and patio heaters so the party could go ahead. Inevitably the kids party led on to a ‘gathering’ of the Parents, where hot curry and chips were ‘just what the Doctor ordered’!

On Sunday morning most of us were unexpectedly up early, soon forgetting the lie-in we had intended to have, as we discovered it had snowed A LOT in the night! There was a thick blanket of snow covering the field and we just had to get out in it!

By the time we met for Coffee Morning the wintry sun had melted most of the snow, but it was nice to be able to sit outside. Stewards Andy, Georgina, Bernie, and Nicola were the first to be presented with our new NWDA umbrellas; as were previous stewards for this season so far. Steve and Lee were presented with their winnings in The Grand National Sweepstake; and Caroline was awarded "it wasn’t even funny" The James Brocklehurst Trophy. She had attempted to put Di’s new eyeshadow on her lips! The eyeshadow WAS pink so you have to sympathise with Caz! Maybe we are just getting too good at making sure we don’t do or say anything daft and get lumbered with this wonderful trophy!

Easter Meet 2008

Great Comberton, Pershore

21st-25th March

As the NWDA committee endured storm force gales Thursday night, and awoke to snow Friday morning, it did cross their minds that they may be spending the Easter Break alone!

But by 10.00 Friday morning the sun was shining and a steady stream of campers began to pour through the gates; amounting to 77 units at the final count. The rest of the day was spent setting up, greeting friends old and new, or keeping warm!

There was ‘background’ music in the Marquee Friday evening, and some chose to seek warmth in Jerry, the Landowners, Golf Club bar.

Saturday morning we were up early to provide Easter Crafts, Egg decorating and Colouring Competitions, Tuck Shop, and Kids Raffle ticket sales.

Between 3.30pm and 5pm Ade took on the very serious job of Bingo calling in the marquee, which was well attended.

Excitement was then mounting as young and old prepared to show off their talents in the Karaoke Contest. This proved very entertaining with little Jai (Ghostbusters) and Gill being voted the winners at the end of the evening.

Sunday we were up early again, and off on a Ramble up Bredon Hill; with a Hot Cross Bun in our backpacks for sustenance later. The walk, in beautiful spring sunshine and a very bracing wind, took around 2 hours; a little longer for the group of us that decided to continue up to the Monument at the top! The view and the sense of achievement made it well worth the effort. What a way to spend your 11th birthday Lizzie!

At 2pm Egg Throwing Contests, Easter games, and an Under 5’s Egg Hunt took place in near freezing conditions; then the brave committee invited people to pay 20p each to pelt them with raw eggs in aid of this year’s Charity-Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Generators could soon be heard as members headed for their showers to warm up and wash the egg out of their hair!

By 8pm everyone had recovered enough to support the Easter Bonnet parade and Disco in the marquee. Well done to the winners, and we hope you like the photo of our stylish DJ’s too!

Monday morning we had a slight lie-in, time for a cooked breakfast even, before Coffee Morning at 11pm. We enjoyed a warm drink and delicious hot cross bun before getting down to business: Prizes for Egg Decorating as well as Colouring Competitions were awarded in age groups to…Ellie, Hannah, Jenny, Katherine, Jamie, Connie, Hannah, and Shannon.

Pete received a special mention for his Health and safety ‘advice’, and Steve was wished a happy 50th Birthday.

Grainne was first to be awarded the new Children’s Brocklehurst Award by wondering who the Assistant Youth Leaders were(its her own Parents!) and Keith Bratt won the Brocklehurst Award for putting the kettle on to boil…but not actually putting the kettle on the burner he had just lit!

A special Thank You goes to the Lyons family for donating a rare edition Mini Mouse to auction off to raise funds for this years chosen charity. Thanks also to the family who won it with their final bid of £20.

There were many lucky winners of raffle prizes, including an ‘Allo Allo’ Renée look-alike who Steve wanted his photo taken with!

Some people sadly had to leave us during Monday, but there were enough left to fill the Golf Club Bar later for a Family Quiz Night.

Unfortunately I didn’t note down the name of the winning team; but Well Done. You know who you are!

So, although the weather hadn’t been as fantastic as it was last Easter, we do think it could have been a lot worse. And it certainly didn’t spoil the fun as we think you will agree when you look at the photos.

Greenfields, Balsall Common

An intimate weekend: Peaceful, quiet, and without the bad weather that had been predicted. There were so few of us there that we ALL managed to squeeze into David and Chris’ fantastic Hymermobile for an impromptu gathering Friday evening. All quiet by 11 pm of course!

Saturday, whilst the weather wasn’t good enough to sit out in the middle of a field, it wasn’t too bad and most people took the opportunity to do their own thing; whether it be a trip over to Jacksons, a cosy day in the caravan reading, or a lads afternoon in watching the Rugby.

We had been joined this weekend by new members Kevin, Jayne, Charlotte, and Tom. We hope they enjoyed this peaceful weekend and will join us again soon.

Sunday morning we awoke to glorious sunshine…and the sound of David farmer playing his guitar. We were able to breakfast outside, and have Coffee Morning as usual.

As we drove home we passed through areas that had obviously suffered a recent ‘downpour’ and wondered if Balsall Common was the only place that had escaped the rain!

North Warwickshire District Association

37th Annual General Meeting

3.30pm-Saturday 16th February 2008

Rowington Village Hall

A few of us arrived Friday to camp for the weekend, and start preparations for Saturday’s AGM.

When the time came it was lovely to see everyone, for some the first time since Christmas, and the room was soon buzzing.

Before the meeting began we had been looking at photographs on a screen of recently departed Jim Oliver, who was a founder member of NWDA. A minutes silence was requested whilst we all remembered Jim and reflected on the sad loss. Jim’s wife Shirley and one of his daughters came to the meeting.

We were also pleased to welcome Regional Council Representative Trevor Cooke and his wife Ann.

The meeting began with us being proudly able to present a cheque for £4,330 to a representative from the Diana Princess of Wales Children’s Hospital. The money was raised by NWDA, their friends and families, in memory of our own Stuart Buchanan. We are delighted that the money will buy an electric bed for ward 5, where Stuart had been well cared for.

The Charity we are supporting this year, which was recently launched at our Christmas Party, is Guide Dogs for the Blind. We aim to raise £5000 which will enable us to name and pay for a Guide Dogs first year of training. Look out for fundraising events coming up throughout the year.

Our Chairman Steve started the individual reports and covered our successful hosting of last years CCRM at Drayton Bassett. Our much valued THS stewards were thanked publicly for doing an excellent job; and the bench sited last year on the field at our IOW site, in memory of Stuart, was mentioned. A review of the year reminded us of how much we had done, and a touching description of each committee member reminded us of how much THEY all do.

Individual members then gave their reports for the year, which were concise and sometimes entertaining; and once the formalities of new appointments were made we were all ready for a refreshments break.

After the break new roles were confirmed: The main changes are that Steve Davis has decided to stand down from the committee but will continue to maintain the website; and Ade Houldey remains on committee but has handed over (due to a work promotion and increased responsibilities) his role of PRO to Jayne Bishop, who adds this to her Charity Co-ordinator role.

A presentation was made to Neil Whitlock for his lovely CCRM pennon design before handing over to Trevor Cooke, regional Rep, who made a few announcements and thanked us for a well conducted meeting.

The Andy Buckley Trophy this year goes to Grainne Hanley for her attendance, enthusiasm, and commitment since joining the CCY last year. Nikki received the trophy on her behalf.

After the meeting was closed we were able to enjoy a Baked Potato Supper, with a delicious choice of fillings, and an informal social evening to catch up with each others news.

Much later, when we were all more ‘chilled’, what could well be the committee of the future decided to have a premature rehearsal of an AGM. OUR CHILDREN! They took their roles very seriously, impersonated their parents perfectly, and kept us very entertained!

Annual Chairman’s Dinner Dance 2008

Once again some of our NWDA members attended this prestigious event at Drayton Manor Park. What better reason could there be for buying a posh frock and dancing into the early hours in high heels instead of walking boots? And that’s just the men! You do have to eat very little all day in order to leave plenty of room for the seven course meal though! And any fears of being too full to dance after such a feast are completely unfounded as there are After Dinner Speeches and entertainment to listen to while your food goes down!

This year, after the speeches, we were serenaded by a Mr Richard Comfort; who returned to sing again towards the end of the evening. In between we danced the night away to Party Music provided for us by the Central Counties Social secretary Les, and our own Chairman Steve Kennings; with Ade Houldey ably filling a gap when they experienced a technical hitch!

Take a look at the photographs, see who you can recognise, and see how well us campers can ‘scrub up’

When we have to.

Christmas Party Saturday 8th December 2007

The scene was set, and Santa was on his way, as families with children started to arrive for the first part of our Christmas party.

The children were entertained, met Santa, received some lovely gifts in Santa’s log cabin, and enjoyed a delicious plated buffet tea.

The room at The Shirley Centre was warm and inviting, and the tables were decorated in this year’s theme of Black and Silver; as were most of our guests. It was so lovely to see everyone again.

The adult’s buffet that followed was a fantastic feast of Christmas fayre, and there was plenty to go around. Afterwards there was a huge cake wishing everyone a Merry Christmas from N.W.D.A.

‘After Dinner Speeches’ included introducing the Committee and their partners to everyone and presenting the ladies with chocolates: The Temporary Holiday Sites Stewards were thanked for all their hard work; and the raffle was drawn with some fantastic prizes for the lucky winners.

We also took the opportunity at the end of a great camping year to introduce next years adopted charity: We are going to be raising money for Guide Dogs for the Blind; and were joined tonight by a gorgeous puppy dog and her handler. We are also delighted to say that one of our members Dil Jones has kick started the fundraising by donating a massive £1000. MANY THANKS Dil Jones and Parcel Force.

Finally it was great to be able to welcome Mick Barr onto the floor as he wanted to present a bouquet of flowers to the young lady who he considers saved his life when he suffered a Heart Attack at the end of our Halloween Meet (perhaps future Halloween Meets should carry a health warning!) but unfortunately she was away on holiday. Anyway thanks to Rhea’s actions Mick made it to Hospital where he had surgery and has made an excellent recovery.

N.W.D.A committee, family and friends would like to wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year

The Best of the Brocklehurst

If you find the weekly Brocklehurst Award faintly amusing here is some information about its origins aswell as a round up of some of the best.

The silver plated serving dish came from Michelle Leivers, who actually bid for and won it at auction after the annual awning sale three years ago.

The name of James Brocklehurst came from a rather strange gentleman who crashed through the front door of Ade and Jayne’s house during a private party, trod on and broke one of Hannah’s toys, told us his name, then announced to us that he was there to collect his son; whereby he soon discovered that he had gone to the wrong house!

Soon after that Ade broke off the steering wheel in his car, and insisted it would be fine once he had stuck it back on!

Because we felt this kind of stupidity deserved some kind of recognition, and because Michelle was desperate to be rid of her silver trinket (having already tried without success to secretly leave it in other peoples caravans) it was awarded to Ade.

And so The James Brocklehurst Trophy is now famously awarded to someone, most D.A weekends, for doing or saying something really silly (which they usually instantly regret!)

Here is a list of some of the winners so far…

Jayne Houldey was in a public toilet, accidentally pulled the help cord, and when someone came to her assistance was so embarrassed that she told them it was 2 year old Hannah who had done it!

Caroline Roberts thought that caravan microwaves could run off gas!

Henrietta thought you needed a passport to go to the I.O.W!

Steve Kennings was holding up Lost Property one coffee morning, and when he finally took notice of what his wife was trying to tell him he realised that the sunglasses he was trying to find an owner for were HIS!

Sarah Davis declared late one night whilst sitting out under the stars, having consumed an amount of wine, that "the planes round here are so low you can see their indicators"!

Mary Whitehouse also declared late one night whilst also sitting out under the stars, having also consumed an amount of wine, that "someone had a lot of lights at the top of their flagpole"…what she was actually looking at was the Lichfield Radio Masts!

Michelle Leivers bought some books for her husband at the May Day book stall, but when she proudly presented them to Mark he had to tell her they were the ones HE had donated!

Mark Hill was once daft enough to fill a bucket in the boot of his car with water, having forgotten that it had a hole drilled in it!

Paul Gromet was just as daft to have fallen down a ditch, in the middle of the night by his caravan, having also forgotten it was there!

Mark Nicklin was once caught on his hands and knees, with his head in the caravan fridge, looking for maltezers in nothing but his underpants!

Min made the unfortunate mistake of referring to a generator as a ‘vibrator’.

Chris Edwards also made the mistake of referring to a satellite station in the sky as a ‘playstation’.

But the strangest case of mistaken identity was when Harriett Leivers mistook the bonfire pile at Binton (a few weeks before they were due to host a bonfire party) for Andy and Ruth’s tent!.

Keeping it in the family Mark Leivers won the award, at this years Halloween meet, for getting into the shower to remove the remains of his vampire makeup, sitting on the loo naked and finding out too late that the water had run out! He had to seriously grovel to wife Michelle to help him out!

Talking of Andy Nicklin we are sure he received the award once but cannot remember what for!

We hope you enjoyed reading about our Brocklehurst All Stars.

If there is anyone we have forgotten that you think deserves a mention please let us know.

Also if you tell us which story you find the most amusing we may even start an Annual ‘Over All Winners Award’!

We do think that a special prize should go to the Leivers family for having the MOST family members to have won the award…especially as Michelle would rather see the back of it!

The Haunted Stables at Wilmcote

Prepare to be scared! Look at the photo’s if you dare! A spooky time was had by all at our 4th Halloween meet at our usual ’ haunt’ by Mary Arden’s house near Stratford.

Guests started to arrive Friday morning and many were soon decorating their scary units. By nightfall the tempting aroma of hot soup, crusty bread, and mulled wine was drawing people to the devilishly decorated Haunted House; otherwise known as a marquee-this time a larger hired one to accommodate all our victims.

Excitement was rising as everyone waited for their turn to go on the now famous Ghost Walks; this year split into 5 groups. As they got underway the night air was repeatedly filled with the sounds of loud heartbeats, growls, ghostly mutterings, and ear piercing screams; some recorded and some real! The experience ended with a terrifying journey through a dark maze containing various bloodthirsty scenes!

The actors and actresses were later unmasked and revealed to us all in the marquee.

On Saturday morning many were adding the finishing touches to their units

whilst the children were invited into the marquee to have a go at a Lucky Dip, to buy Kids Raffle Tickets, and to buy tempting treats at the Tuck Shop.

Saturday afternoon the youngsters were able to make Bats and witches Hats aswell as enter the haunted House Colouring Competition. They could also have a go at Apple Bobbing or Doughnut Nibbling, which was quite a ‘scream’! A team of Face Painters was then available to transform anyone who needed something specific for their Fancy Dress Outfit later.

There was just enough time for the Jack-o-Lanterns (carved pumpkins) to be brought to the front of the marquee ready for judging before it was time to get changed into wicked costumes ready for ‘Trick or Treat’.

Fortunately everyone had treats ready at their units so no tricks needed to be played!

The Devil’s Disco began at 6.30 p.m and it was fantastic to see so many creepy costumes; but a little scary when you couldn’t tell who was behind the masks!

Food from Hells Kitchen was served around 7 p.m, with Hot Dogs, Chilli and Rice, or Chicken Hotpot to choose from. It was DEVILICIOUS!

Dancing to all the best spooky songs continued until 11 p.m, with prizes for the best Fancy Dress Costumes being awarded halfway through: Best Girl was Emma, Best Boy was Liam, Best Woman was Diane (who even managed to find a real Dalmatian to borrow to add the finishing touch to her Cruella Deville costume!) and Best Man was Andy.

Amazingly Committee and CCY members were up early enough (well they did get an extra hour due to the clocks going back!) to prepare and cook breakfasts, for sale from 9 a.m onwards. The wonderful smell of bacon wafting across the field even tempted people through the rain to the kitchen.

After breakfast there were various prizes to be awarded as follows:-

The prize for Best Dressed Halloween Unit went once again to Andy and Celia, who put a monstrous amount of effort into their display.

Bonus ball winners were Dave, Michelle, and Sharon.

The Under 5,s Colouring Competition winner was Hannah; the 6-8 years winner was Jenny; and the Over 9’s winner was Joe.

Winner of the Best Jack-o-Lantern was Lorraine; and the first drawn correctly completed Hunt the Bats entry was Max.

The Brockellhurst Award went to Mark Leivers for deciding to have a ‘morning after’ shower to remove his Dracula face paint and black hair, whereby he was sat on the loo naked to find the water had just gone; which left HIM in quite a predicament and his WIFE with the upper hand! It does conjure up an hilarious image doesn’t it?! So Mark and Michelle will hold the award until next season, which is rather fitting as Michelle donated the silver trinket in the first place!

Of course there were many Children’s and Adult’s Raffle Prize winners aswell; so WELL DONE TO ALL.

Finally NWDA would like to thank Colliers Land Rover http://www.colliers.landrover.co.uk/ for supporting us once again by enabling us to hire a superb marquee for the weekend; and Bernard Robe (independent Financial Advisor) whose support enabled us to have radios to marshal the weekend.

And don’t our boys just love having Walkie Talkies to play with!

You can also tell they love being Action Men from the aerial shots of the field taken from the top of the marquee! by Mark Nicklin.

NOW CHECK THOSE PICTURES.

Binton 12th-14th October 2007

As the camping season draws to a close and the nights draw in we consider ourselves very lucky to have enjoyed yet another mild and dry weekend.

This not only made it a very pleasant weekend for the 40 units camping, but must have made it a little less stressful for the 8 CCJ (Camping Club Juniors) members taking their CCJ tests.

Youngsters can become members and camp in an area with a CCJ leader from the age of 8 years; learning about pitching their tents safely, care of their kit, first aid, and code of conduct for campers. We hope they will also develop an appreciation of the countryside, make new friends along the way, and progress into the CCY (Camping Club Youth) at the age of 12 years with a good grounding.

The test covers the afore mentioned aspects, gives the kids something to work towards, and serves as a taster of what it will be like to take the CCY test in a few years time. The test was conducted by the CCY leader Andy Nicklin by observing, questioning and chatting to the youngsters throughout the weekend.

For others the social club made a welcome diversion and many of us took the opportunity to cheer on the England teams in the football and rugby matches on the T.V Saturday afternoon and evening.

For those in need of ‘retail therapy’ Stratford was only a few miles away.

Sunday morning was slightly different in that coffee morning had to be rescheduled for 1 pm; so it was more like ‘afternoon tea’! However Georgina filled the gap by doing a fab makeup party outside her unit. It was very interesting and there were a few bargains to be had too!

At last it was time for coffee and for the CCJ to find out who had passed their CCJ tests. David Wilkes (National Youth Chairman and Regional Youth Liaison Officer) and wife Marlene had joined us this weekend so David began by saying a few words. We are always grateful for his continued support of our Youth. Assistant Youth Leader Shaun Roberts also explained what is involved with taking the test. Chairman Steve Kennings then presented the successful candidates with their certificates and badges. And of course THEY ALL PASSED. So WELL DONE to Katie, Laura, Mikiela, Jack, Joe, Jake, Callum, and Lewis. They all worked hard under test conditions this weekend aswell as during the weekly sessions with leaders Charlotte and Lee who always make it good fun. Thanks also to CCY member Grainne who was given a box of chocolates for helping with the test.

To give our youngest campers something to aspire to several tots were presented with their NWDA Bears polo shirts; which they were soon wearing with pride.

Keeping the Youth in the limelight CCY member Nikki won the Bonus Ball, and CCY member Harriett was awarded the Brocklehurst Trophy this weekend for asking Andy Saturday night why he wasn’t going into his tent AS THEY PASSED BY THE BONFIRE PILE! Maybe she needs Nightime Vision Glasses!

And finally we thought you might like to see what Jayne Bishop and Jayne Houldey will be wearing on the Camping and Caravanning Club Stand soon…They are the ones that look like Air Hostesses!

Elmdale House, Studley

Fortunately the rain of Friday evening was not an indicator of what the weather would be like all weekend: in fact considering it will be October on Monday I’d say we were very lucky with Saturday and Sunday’s weather. But then we usually are for CONKERS AND PANCAKES.

The sun shone on Saturday afternoon as names were drawn for this year’s conkers contest. It wasn’t long before those conkers were soon dangling, swinging, and being knocked out!

16 children entered, with the final between Lizzie and Katie being played Sunday morning. Lizzie was the ‘conquerer’…but NOT because Katie had eaten the conker, as Steve Kennings said at coffee morning!

Twice as many adults took the same amount of time to reach their final, also played on Sunday morning. The final between Shaun and Tony resulted in Tony taking home the shield. Well done to them, aswell as to the runners up and everyone who took part.

After what may have been the last barbeque of the season (unless the weather is kind to us at Binton in two weeks time) we were all lured into the marquee Saturday evening by the smell of pancakes cooking. There was plenty for everyone thanks to ‘tossers’ Gary and Darren, assisted by their wives Geri and Jayne. Fortunately there was the opportunity to dance off some of the calories afterwards!

Sunday was such a lovely day that many stayed to enjoy the afternoon sunshine after coffee morning was over. Aswell as presenting the conkers awards, the CCJ(camping club juniors) members, who presided over coffee morning so fantastically last week, were presented with certificates for passing that module of their portfolios.

The now famous Brocklehurst award went to Chris Edwards this weekend. He made the daft statement that the satellite he could see moving across the sky the previous evening was ‘’building a new PLAYSTATION’’!! Wife Jenny was so delighted to be keeper of the trophy for the next two weeks that she polished it and gave it pride of place on their table!

And finally. . . the curious photograph heading this weeks entry is of webmaster Steve Davis, who was pleased to have bumped into a long lost relative. Not sure I can actually tell them apart though!

Now see the pictures by Steve and Sam

Greenhill, near Stratford

21st-23rd September 2007

We were looking forward to being at this site for a relaxing and peaceful weekend; and we weren’t disappointed.

Of course we didn’t sit around enjoying the mild weather ALL weekend: On Saturday morning our men took a trip out to the storage shed to have a good sort out of all the equipment…while the girls went clothes shopping!

On Saturday afternoon our CCJ (Camping Club Juniors) had their regular training session with leader Charlotte, and Lee; announcing that for this week Chairman Steve Kennings would be redundant Sunday as they were taking over announcements at coffee morning!

Saturday evening, after most of us had enjoyed barbeques, we spent the remainder of the evening in the Barn. The kids had plenty of energy to dance the night away, while the adults did some more relaxing!

On Sunday morning there was excitement in the air as the time approached for our CCJ (including 12 year old Grainne who is now CCY) to present themselves at coffee morning. Soon after we had all been served to tea, coffee and chocolate biscuits they took their places with scripts at the ready. They did a splendid job of delivering the relevant facts and figures in a humourous fashion. We were all so impressed that Steve may not get his job back!

There were 21 units camped with us this weekend, Aneel won the football card cash prize, and Molly was awarded the Brocklehurst Trophy for wondering who Pete and Jenny were when her Dad was actually referring to the Generator!

Children's Weekend

14th-16th September 2007 at Hoar Park, Nuneaton

It soon became clear from the late afternoon sunshine and the speed at which the rally field was filling up that we were in for an excellent weekend. And we weren't wrong.

What better way is there to spend a weekend than in the countryside (complete with countryside smells!) in fine weather with plenty of outdoor activities to keep your children occupied? This is why we wanted to host our first ever Children's Weekend. And we think it went well.

The fun began Friday evening with Gary Bratt taking children and adults on a Bat Hunt. We knew there were bats in the area; but unfortunately we didn't actually spot any! (unless we scared them all away) Anyway there were 'Bat Fact Packs' for us to keep and learn from ready to be tested on later.

Saturday morning we all had to be down at the farm early where Paul, from Natural World  http://www.naturalworldexperience.com/ , was waiting to take us into a marquee to look at, handle, and learn about various creatures: We met stick insects, praying mantis, millipedes, giant snails, a tarantula, silk worms, and a huge moth.

Next we walked beside a field to a wooded area with a brook where we all had a go at pond dipping and bug hunting. We caught a lot and learnt a lot too.

Finally we were taken around the farm where we were able to feed many varieties of ducks and fowl, goats, a three legged deer and a large pig called Marion! There was also a well stocked gift shop to spend pocket money in. Thanks to Siobhan and young Andrew who worked with Paul to help provide this wonderful two and a half hour experience.

By the time we arrived back on site the children had worked up an appetite ready for the Farmyard Box packed lunches that had been prepared by remaining committee members (thanks girls) These were eaten 'al fresco' on a large picnic mat and there was very little left to clear away afterwards!

Not much time to rest though because at 2.30, in the marquee, paper and paints were provided for the children to paint a farmyard picture. These were later judged in three different age group categories, by impartial judges Tracy, Jan, and Barry (thanks guys) so that prizes could be awarded at coffee morning.

At 4.00 our own CCJ members reported to CCJ leader Charlotte for their usual Fun Training Session. Some of the CCJ (Camping Club Juniors) members are currently working towards taking their CCJ tests soon; and today they were learning Basic First Aid.

Meanwhile there was just enough time left for a BBQ before getting ready for the Children's Disco at 7.30 p.m.

The evening actually began with a Children's Quiz, and the first round was all about Bats...so we soon found out who had read their 'Bat Fact Pack'. Other rounds followed and Liam's team won.

The kids then 'danced their socks off' in an attempt to win Spot Prizes; and were soon joined by the adults who couldn't sit still any longer! We also took the opportunity to celebrate Sam's 6th, and Katie and Laura's 11th birthdays.

Amazingly the kids had enough energy left (not sure the same could be said for some of the adults though) to be ready to play outdoor games by10a.m Sunday. Thanks to Jan, Andy, Shaun and Caz who organised football and other activities.

There was a full house for coffee morning at 11.00, with many purchasing last minute Children's Raffle Tickets. Prizes were awarded  for the Nature Quiz handed out at the start of the weekend,  to Hannah and family; to the under 5's painting winner Benjamin; the 5-10 years winner Ben, and the over 10's winner Lizzie. Well done all.

Jack and Lewis received prizes for doing well during Saturday's CCJ training session; and the Brocklehurst Trophy this week went to Min Girling: She said at some point during the weekend that ''one of those VIBRATORS would help keep your caravan battery charged''. Of course what she actually meant was a GENERATOR! Just the kids looked a bit baffled!

On a more respectable note Jenny and Allan both won the Bonus Ball cash prizes.

Any spare moments during the weekend could be spent visiting the Garden Centre, Craft Village and Restaurant, or Play Area.

So all in all a fantastic weekend made special by a hard working committee, some late summer sunshine, and most importantly by YOU and YOUR CHILDREN who chose to join us. Thankyou once again.

       Now look at the PIC'S

Fishing Weekend at The Riddings, Atherstone

7th-9th September 2007

The weather forecast was o. k, so we may have that to thank for a good turnout again for our annual fishing contest.

We all enjoyed the  late summer's evening sunshine Friday; although many retired early, with alarms set, to ensure they were up in time for the peg draw at 8.00 a. m!

The fifteen contestants this year included a fisherWOMAN (Dawn) who competed for six hours, on a mild but overcast Saturday, for the biggest 'catch' of the day.

Meanwhile the fishing 'widows' gathered around a pot of tea (until it was time to open the wine!) for a girly chat and a laugh;  making sure, of course, that they dutifully popped along to the pool to check on progress, to deliver freshly prepared baguettes at lunchtime, and to show an interest in, and applaud their partners during the 'weigh in' at 3.00 p.m.

The winning catch of the day was netted by long standing N.W.D.A member Neil Whitlock, whose catch weighed in at over 17lb; but as he was not camping with us this year it was decided the shield should go to the best catch by an on site camper, which was George Scott whose fish weighed in at over 12lb. Well done George.

The exitement wasn't quite over for the day because at 5.00 many (mostly male again )gathered around T. V's to watch either the England Football or Rugby teams play. Spirits were high after a double victory for England and it wasn't long before BBQ's were fired up and the beer was flowing! Needless to say a good time was had by all.

An impromptu bat walk also took place along a tree lined country lane off the site entrance. Unfortunately no bats were spotted; although one of our camper's did a good impersonation of one from up a tree! Thankfully he didn't attempt to fly!

As compensation for not finding any REAL bats, secretary Lin Kennings had some home cooked popcorn ready for us when we got back.

After an early start and a busy day Saturday, Stewards Shaun and Caz had respectfully set coffee morning for 11.30 a. m Sunday so everyone could have a lie in first. The fishing trophy had to be presented to George Scott's Grandaughter Beth as George didn't know he had won and had gone FISHING! The Brocklehurst Trophy (awarded to someone at the end of each rally for saying or doing something really silly!) went to Paul for falling into a ditch in the dark even though he knew it was there!

The mild weather meant that most people were in no particular hurry to leave. The kids enjoyed a promised game of rounders, while some went for a walk to a nearby wildlife area.

Once again Thanks to committee, family, friends, children, and fellow campers for another great weekend.

August Bank Holiday 2007

Evesham Sports Club

What is the recipe for a fantastic N.W.D.A weekend? A brilliant idea for a fun theme, a dedicated committee who make things happen, hot weather, and a great bunch of campers! We had all the right ingredients this weekend, and the proof was in the pudding. School pudding!

The theme for the weekend was ‘School Days’ and it was an invitation to relive some of the best days of your life!

The colour written on your programme told you which House Team you would be in (Yellow for Evesham, Blue for Binton, White for the Isle Of Wight, Red for Rhayader-some of our Holiday Sites) with opportunities for earning house points for your team over the weekend.

On Saturday morning there was an Art Class in the School Marquee where ‘pupils’ had to do a still life painting from a choice of subjects displayed on the table. Three ‘star’ pupils would later be chosen to receive prizes.

There were no more lessons timetabled for the day as it was SPORTS DAY. A supportive crowd cheered on as the four House Teams competed in various races for house points. There must have been a few adults who never thought they’d ever have to do an ‘egg and spoon’ or ‘sack race’ again!

Pupils were then allowed some free time to prepare for an evening of fun at The School Disco. Nobody got detention for incorrect school uniform, and the evening began with a CRACKERJACK style game which was hilarious. I’ve never seen so many cabbages outside of the school canteen! Afterwards prizes were awarded for best Fancy Dress, and then everyone was able to ‘let their hair down’ for the disco. All year groups danced the night away, watched over by Prefects hoping to be able to hand out ‘lines’ for misbehaviour; but no incidents of smoking behind the bike sheds were reported!

After a busy day it was ‘lights out’ in the dormitories by 11pm as students needed to be up early the next day for a class led by a visiting Animal Man.

This turned out to be a great ‘hands on’ learning experience as we got to handle a cockroach, giant snail, tarantula, millipede, tree frog, snake, rat, and some guinea-pigs.

Once students had calmed down it was out to the playing fields again for a game of volleyball, followed by some free time to go on a trip along the riverside to Evesham where there was a fishing contest and exhibition taking place. There were reported sightings of some of our members in the Beer Tent!

Later on, as long as you had eaten all your dinner you could have some traditional school puddings. These included rhubarb crumble and custard, chocolate crispy cake, cake and pink custard, and rice pudding. Lots of people put their hands up for seconds!

With full tummies everyone was just about for a Subject Based Quiz followed by a disco to complete another action packed day.

On Monday morning the School Hall (well just outside the marquee) was set ready for the ‘Leavers Assembly’ and Prize Giving.

Prizes were awarded for the Art Class paintings, correctly completed homework's year 6 S.A.T.S paper for 11 year olds!) and the over all winning RED House Team. The Brocklehurst Trophy went to Steve Davis (webmaster and Regalia Officer) for displaying one of our N.W.D.A flags so the writing was back to front! The Harvest Festival Hamper (made up from donations) was given to the family with the lucky draw programme number, and Lewis was presented with his red CCJ T-shirt because he is now 8 years old and can now camp in the Junior area. The CCJ members sang to us to a backing track of children's hymns.

Finally our ‘caretakers’(usually known as Stewards) Steve & Lin Kennings and Mark & Diane Nicklin were presented with N.W.D.A mugs as a thank you for doing a fantastic job.

So it’s SCHOOLS OUT again for another week or more, and then back to it again for real.

I expect some Parents will be more pleased than most of their kids will be to see them go back to school…even though most of us did enjoy reliving what we often end up referring to as THE BEST DAYS OF OUR LIVES.

Marston Edge Nurseries, Long Marston 17-19 August 2007

A wet, windy, and otherwise quiet weekend: But then it is nice to have weekends like that sometimes; although we would have preferred a little less of the wet and windy!

The field at Long Marston is spacious, flat and well kept so it was a shame we couldn't make the most of it. Campers either stayed indoors or went into nearby Stratford. We also heard about a village fete being held in  a local pub and decided that had to be worth a visit.

Some of us were determined not to be beaten by the weather, and went ahead with BBQ'S Saturday evening- all huddled under Ade's gazebo!. It takes more than a bit of bad weather to stop us relaxing and having a laugh with good friends.

We can always hope that the weather will be better next weekend.

IOW 2007

‘Mud, glorious mud; there’s nothing quite like it for cooling the blood----‘ If that song is anything to go by we must have been VERY cool because there was plenty of MUD at our Holiday Site at Whitecliff Bay on the Isle of Wight!

It was certainly a challenge for stewards, George and Faye, to get campers on and off site, and we applaud them both. Many thanks also to everyone else who helped by towing vehicles out of the mud: After a while the situation was eased when the landowner arranged for the entrance to be levelled and some hardcore laid.

But did we let a bit of rain and mud ruin our holiday? Of Course Not!! In fact the sunny days DID outnumber the rainy days and although the mud stayed long after the rain had stopped most of us enjoyed many lovely days out. The Isle of Wight has so many beaches, beauty spots, and attractions that it would take years to exhaust them all.

Some of the places WE enjoyed visiting were the towns of Sandown, Shanklin, and Ryde;Bembridge windmill, Arreton Barnes Craft Village, the Lavender farm, Robin Hill Theme Park, Godshill(especially the amazing model village), The Donkey Sanctuary, Bembridge Lifeboat Station, Portsmouth Harbour(via Hovercraft), and Cowes during Regatta Week.

We also spent several hot days on the beach, enjoyed walking various stretches of coastal path, and sampled the beers in many local pubs!

Our favourite meal out was at the Yarbridge Inn, Brading(www.yarbridgeinn.co.uk)-closely followed by a fish ‘n’ chip supper on the I.O.W Steam Railway!

The most memorable moment of the holiday was the unveiling of a beautiful bench situated on site in memory of young Stuart Buchanan who so enjoyed his holidays here.

This took place on Thursday 26th July during the first week of his family’s holiday. Most people on site came to the coffee morning that preceded the ceremony, then listened as NWDA Chairman Steve Kennings made a moving but amusing speech. Stuarts cousin Lewis demonstrated how Stuart used to take unsuspecting victims by surprise with his water gun; and Stuarts sisters Katie and Laura cut the ribbon. By the time Stuarts Dad Derek stood to say a few heartfelt words most people were dabbing their eyes.

It was an emotional morning but we know that Stuart will be remembered with affection every time someone sits on his bench and reads the very apt inscription.

Although it rained that day we were lucky enough to have good weather for several birthday celebrations (Lewis, Hannah, Diane) that took place during our time there. Thanks to the camper who volunteered his services as a Children’s Entertainer for Hannah’s party.

So-from mixed emotions to mixed weather it was definitely a holiday to remember.

Whether you were at the Isle of Wight or not we hope you enjoy looking at the photo’s; and wherever you spent your holiday we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Volleyball Meet

Despite the meticulous planning that went into the annual pilgrimage to the Volleyball meet, late changes to plans and personnel arrangements resulted in NWDA arriving with only 6 players for their 1st team and 3 regular volleyball players for their 2nd team.

This years ‘summer’ again dealt a Friday to remember with heavy rains and blustery winds resulting in a mud bath at the entrance to the site. After approx 20 units had made it to their pitches in the lower field, the decision was made by the organising committee to close entry to the field and tow every one onto the top field normally reserved for the working party. This meant that Ade & Jayne had to make new friends this weekend as they were not allowed to pitch with the rest of the NWDA members!

It was with great relief that Saturday morning brought a glorious change in the weather and at 9.30am, following a brief opening ceremony, the matches began. NWDA had managed to loan a Teesside junior to make up a 2nd team and were therefore able to compete in both Division 1 and 3. It is of great interest to see who decides to enter into Division 1 and apart from NECDA98, the places were filled with the normal two teams from Teesside DA and Yorkshire DA, one from H&WDA and one from NWDA.

The early Division 1 NWDA games went well with easy wins against both Teesside and one of the Yorkshire teams; the other Yorkshire team (Flower Power and last years champions), also winning their early games. NWDA then came up against 2005 champions H&WDA and were surprised by their easy win; was this to be NWDA’s year at last!. However the win against H&WDA came at a cost. Following a slip whilst serving, Adrian Houldey had to be substituted after picking up a torn calf muscle – a reoccurrence of the one he picked up at Christmas last year whilst playing indoor league volleyball. This meant a shuffle around of the team with Darren Bishop switching to outside hitter and Jan Wardle coming on as setter. This change appeared to unsettle the NWDA team as they took on the only other unbeaten team, Flower Power, in the final pool match of the day. After a titanic struggle, NWDA lost a very close 1st set but then went on to take the next 2 sets to win 2-1 and win the pool as the only unbeaten team of the day.

Another twist for the team was to come as, with the weather forecast for the Sunday looking poor, the organising committee decided that the semi-final matches were to be played on the Saturday rather than the Sunday. Having just come out of their hardest match, and a day that started at 9.30am, NWDA were faced with a semi-final at 6pm vs. Teesside 2. Tiredness could be seen in their play as, having previously played the best game of the day, NWDA were now struggling to find any form against a team that they had easily beaten 2-0 in the 1st match of the day. Despite winning the 1st set they continued to struggle and lost a close 2nd set. When another injury occurred ½ way through the 3rd set, this time to Aneel Khanna who it has subsequently been discovered has severely torn ankle ligaments, when NWDA were leading by just a few points things looked bleak. This meant the introduction of Rhea Shelly and after another change to the formation was made, NWDA were able to stabilise the ship and with great relief won 2-1 and were into the Division 1 finals.

The NWDA 2nd team playing in Division 3 were unable to win any matches and felt very disheartened at not playing better during the Saturday fixtures. Also a freak injury to Nikki Wardle, a wrist sprain when warming up, has also meant that she too will not be able to play volleyball again for several weeks during the summer.

The Sunday morning Final was the only game to be played, and in front of a small crowd, NWDA began their match against reigning champions Flower Power. The disappointment in Ade and Aneel’s faces was clear to see at missing the final – the 1st time NWDA have made it to this stage for over 15 years.

Despite the heroics of Lee Cowperthwaite who literally threw himself around the court, and in many eyes was the player of the tournament, Andy Nicklin’s back court defence and excellent hitting by Mark Fielding in his 1st ever outing with NWDA members, NWDA were missing their 2 injured male players. In the best of 5 set match, NWDA were unable to build enough attacks to trouble Flower Power who won 3-0.

The closing ceremony was moved to the safety of the marquee as the heavens again opened and the rain came down. Medals were awarded to all winners and runners up, along with player of the tournament and young player of the tournament.

We all packed up feeling very disappointed and wet, vowing to come back next year – fitter and injury free – to hopefully go one step further and win the final of Division 1.

Weston on Avon part 2

The weekend at Cooperage farm, Meriden, was unfortunately cancelled due to the field being waterlogged; but luckily for us the field at Weston On Avon (where we were the previous weekend) hadn't quite suffered the same fate: So those of us who weren't afraid of a little rain still managed to have an enjoyable meet!

A Total of eight units and two tents of Junior Campers joined together for a relaxing Friday evening, a stroll to the local pub Saturday afternoon, and a children's birthday party Saturday evening. It would seem that every time we visit this site we have a reason to party! thank goodness for gazebo's!

We awoke to sunshine Sunday morning and only got soaked once during coffee morning-mainly because we waited for the birthday girls to return from the shop so we could light the candles on their cakes!

Happy 11th and 12th birthday to Miki and Beth.

Weston On Avon June 2007

Whilst still feeling elated following our recently hosted and thoroughly enjoyable Central Counties Regional Meet, we were nevertheless looking forward to a quiet and relaxing weekend.
The wet weather forecast probably affected the turn out, which mainly comprised committee members; and apart from throwing a surprise 40th birthday party for the lovely Mrs Jayne Houldey  it WAS very quiet! But Saturday evening we were in the  party spirit and the photos probably say it all!

THE CCRM 2007

The gates opened for business on Thursday; the fields, the stage and the marquee were all decorated to depict the Calendar Year - with a spectacular Halloween stage for our Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The units started to roll in, the Marshalls were immediately on great form and everyone was welcomed with a smile. The full program of entertainment kicked off on Thursday evening in the main marquee with a "Race Night", hosted by Ade, with his six fine fillies taking bets and dishing out the winnings. The night was a great success with a lot of shouting and cheering on for the greyhound dogs.

Friday morning came and it was all stations go: The caravans were rolling in, the traders were all setting up their wares around the Arena, and the main marquee became the height of activity, with Admin for booking in, Raffle, Regalia, Tombola, Refreshments and the Kids Corner, raising money and awareness for the CCY/CCJ sections. The weather was kind to us and the hype was strong as we were all watching the caravans arriving, and numbers rising. We had dreamt of doing 300 and by the time the sun was going down over the field, we were at 375. We were amazed!. Friday night and it was Valentines time. We had Manifesto doing us proud on the music and Steve and Ade playing up the crowd with their antics awarding tokens of love with Chocolates and bubbly to some loving couples.

Saturday morning and it was going to be a scorcher. All the focus was now on the Arena, the Pennons were raised, and people gathered for the official opening of the meet. Straight away the Volleyball tournament kicked off with 10 teams playing against each other through the to Semi-Final stage, ready for a repeat of the NWDA vs NDA Final on Sunday Morning. After the energeticness of the Volleyball, it was time to entertain the kids with "Conk the Clown" and the Fire Brigade on site. Before we knew it, it was time to get ourselves all dressed up for the "Mardi Gras", an amazing turn out from every DA, depicting the Months of the Year. We saw some great sights and amazing creativity. The NWDA entry was huge, with some very scary faces depicting October and Halloween. The judges had a tough job, but it was again awarded to reigning champs Northants who deservingly took the trophy back home again with their George and the Dragon.

Time for preparing the Marque ready for our big act "The Ivy League". It was a gorgeous night, the sides were dropped on the marquee, and the crowds starting arriving. The party spilled outside the marquee, the Santa's , the Fairy’s and many, many Elves started arriving to celebrate Christmas with a bang. The kids had their disco with Xmas tunes and a snow machine, which they all loved. Come 9.15pm and it was time, Ade hit the stage and introduced "The Ivy League" They got the crowds joining in immediately and they seemed to hit the nail on the head, with their memorable performance.

Sunday morning, and a little more reserved we all attended Church with the lovely Rev. MacLachlan, who totally connected with us as Caravanners, and bought his pet wolf puppet, to make us all laugh. Straight back into the Arena and it was time for the Horace Ringrose Family Sports, with a good turnout from each DA, doing games such as Pancake Tossing, and dressing up as Santa!!! There was much cheering from the crowds and it all ended with a mass water fight with the water bombs and NWDA winning overall. Go North Warwicks!!. The games were removed and the Volleyball net went up for the final between North Warwick’s and Notts DA. This was a great final, which went one set each, before a very close third set, which finally went to NWDA… No fix honestly! During all the energeticness of the sports, the traders were all doing well around the Arena and the Raffle Prizes were been claimed, with some smiling faces. No time for a breather, it was straight into the Closing Ceremony, with many acknowledgements and the Trophies were handed out for the Sports, Volleyball and Mardi Gras. The meet was officially closed by the Regional Vice Chairman, Norman Hemsley. The Arena cleared, and the units started to leave, the Marshalls were still all in high spirits and led each and every unit safely off site. The field was looking empty, and everything got dismantled and packed away, leaving everywhere looking like we had never been there. The Farmer was one of the most obliging Land owners we know, and supported us and helped us all throughout. A handful of the Committee stayed on for a last night drink and Chinese, before packing up Monday, and seeing the last of the equipment being taken away, including the Marque. All over for another year, where we look forward to seeing everyone of you at Lindon Top to support SLDA at the CCRM2008.

CCRM 2007 WORKING PARTY.

C.C.R.M. Working party weekend 1-3 June 2007

Ashdene Farm, Dreyton Bassett.

It was with great excitement that we arrived on site ready to work our socks off to prepare the venue for this years Central Counties Regional meet. Even the weather was on our side!!

The working party village was soon established and by the end of the weekend a vast area of farm land was also marked out ready for District Association Members to start arriving later in the week. NWDA committee members, family and friends were joined by National Council Members aswell as other D.A members. All were united by a fantastic atmosphere of exited anticipation for the weekend ahead.

Of course much planning and preparation had already gone into the event and although a lot of the work could not be done till the marquee, trade stands and trailer etc began to arrive, working party members were kept busy sticking tickets onto hundreds of tombola prizes, marking out the grounds (as already mentioned), painting, and drawing up work rotas. A team also shopped, prepared and served food for the working party.

Some of us had to return home (reluctantly) at the end of the weekend to go to work or school. Some planned to commute to work, daily, and some used holiday leave to stay on site. While for others it was a case of ‘What better way to spend your retirement?!’

Either way, this week, many peoples minds were on the weekend ahead.

Wilmcote May 2007
Bowls weekend

After fears that the weekend may be cancelled due to persistent rainfall all week, we were a happy bunch that arrived on site Friday evening ! We were equally as happy to welcome members from East Worcester D.A, whose rally HAD been cancelled at nearby Greenhills due to that rain!

Rain was unable to stop play Saturday, so the Bowls competition went ahead as planned. The field at Wilmcote is perfect for this pleasant passtime. Well done to runners up Dave and Pat; and to winners David and Pauline who were awarded their trophy at Sunday’s coffee morning.

We were determined to ignore the showers, so barbeques were bravely lit Saturday evening. After a chilly evening we were all pleasantly surprised when Sunday turned out to be glorious. We were able to bask in the sunshine while we listened to announcements and presentations at coffee morning. Thanks to this weekends stewards Darren and Jayne. Many thanks also to Pauline who donated part of her Bonus Ball winnings to our chosen charity for this year The Diana Princess of Wales Children’s Hospital.

The James Brockelhurst trophy was awarded to Mark Nicklin for been caught eating out of the fridge on his hands and knees in just his underpants!

See you all at the CCRM  8-10 June.

HEATHCOTE 2007
Mayday Weekend

Thanks to all the NWDA committee and associates we all had a fun filled Bank Holiday Weekend this May Day.
Whether you had a lakeside view, looked  out onto'Teletubby Hill', or were positioned by the hedgerow, the scenery at Lower Heathcote Farm near Warwick was certainly picturesque. Mind you the wind did blow in off the lake at times!
Although we felt the chill of the wind Friday evening and Saturday morning, the sun miraculously warmed up the afternoon for us-just in time for our Summer Fayre. Stalls included penalty shoot out, book sale, hot dogs, cakes, adults bottle tombola, children's lucky jars tombola, 'name the teddy' (well it was a dog actually) and 'guess the number of sweets in  a jar' competitions, bouncy castle and face painting.
Half of the proceeds from the summer fayre are going to NWDA's chosen charity for this year The Diana Princess of Wales Children's Hospital. Last month we raised over £2000 when we held a sponsored walk around Earlswood lakes, organised by the Nicklin family in memory of Stuart Buchanan.
After the sun had gone down we enjoyed more fun in the marquee where an hilarious version of the famous TV show 'Mr and Mrs' was followed by a disco.
Most people were up early Sunday morning though for our annual 'Awning Sale'. There was much buying and selling to be done and some items that remained unsold outside awnings, later went for a good price at the Auction!
The youngsters were rewarded for sitting through the marathon sale when the bouncy castle was inflated afterwards.
And for those with any energy left the afternoon was spent taking part in the family games!; and very vigorous they looked too! But it was all good practice for next months Central Counties Regional Meet. (do please read the link and advertisement for this exciting forthcoming event)
We soon discovered the day was by no means over when we arrived at the Marque to cheer on our favourite contenders for the Miss Mayflower Beauty Contest :Of course it was a contest with a difference as all the contestants were men (or so they claimed!) A quiz and  disco followed.
Thankfully everything was back to normal in time for coffee morning on Monday. Presentations were made and the raffle was drawn.
Michelle Leivers won  The James Brocklehurst Trophy for buying her husband Mark some books from Saturdays book stall, only to discover when she proudly presented them to him that they were the ones he had denoted !

ASHDENE FARM 20-22ND APRIL 2007

If we hadn't been spoilt with unseasonably hot weather the past few weeks, this weekend would probably have been described as 'pleasant for the time of year'.
Being at Ashdene Farm, Drayton Bassett, gave some people the opportunity to see where this years
Central Counties Regional Meet is going to be held (plug plug!!); and gave others the opportunity to flock to nearby Drayton Manor Park and Zoo for a great day out on Saturday.

Whatever the reason for more than thirty units joining us for an otherwise quite relaxing weekend, we think a good time was had by all.
Congratulations to Mark, Diane, and Lewis who unexpected extended their family by going home with two gorgeous puppies, purchased from the landowner!
Vice Chairman Trevor made announcements at coffee morning and was delighted to be able to award the James Brockelhurst Trophy to wife Mary- for thinking that the Lichfield Radio Mast (marked by red lights shining in the distance) was one of our members flag pole lights! Thanks to Ade and Jayne for stewarding another brill weekend.

GREENHILL 2007

Despite being Friday the 13th approximately thirty units flocked to Greenhill at Bearley, on a lovely evening, to enjoy a relaxing weekend in the sunshine.

We thought we were lucky enough to have fabulous weather over Easter but we were even more delighted when it continued through this weekend. The sun cream was flowing, legs emerged from winter hibernation, and barbeques went into overtime.
Some people took the opportunity to drive into nearby Stratford for various reasons ( Matalan being one!), some went for a walk along the canal and over the aqueduct, others walked as far as the pub at the end of the lane; and a few decided that walking was definitely not on the agenda when there was such good weather to make the most of !
But most of us gathered together to watch The Grand National on Saturday afternoon, having purchased our sweepstake tickets from  stewards Gary and Gerri. There were two runners up prizes, and Steve Catton was the lucky 1st place winner.
There was not a winner of the James Brockelhurst trophy this weekend, although chairman Steve did have youth leader Andy worried when he called him up to receive it during coffee morning; until he revealed it was simply because he didn't want it on his shelf any longer! So be careful what you say or do or you could be the next unlucky winner!

Easter 2007

Our guests this Easter certainly brought the sunshine with them; or was it the sunshine that bought them to us?! Either way we were delighted that over 120 families decided to join NWDA at Great Comberton Golf Club, near Pershore, to enjoy the Easter break.

After arriving during the day Friday we allowed everyone a little ‘settling in’ time before the fun and games began Saturday afternoon. Children were able to decorate hard boiled eggs, make Easter cards and colour in Easter pictures in the marquee, while a fierce but fun tug of war took place outside.

There was enough time to recover and maybe enjoy a barbeque with family and friends, before returning to the marquee for a fantastic night of entertainment.

The famous TV game show ‘Family Fortunes’ was recreated complete with our own ‘Les Dennis’ and ‘Mrs. Lesley Dennis’ by making up teams of families from the audience, with hilarious results! A disco followed, but we needed to be up and ready by 11am Sunday morning for a ‘not- to- be missed’ ramble up a very inviting hill. Well it looked inviting from the field!! We went up and down hills, across fields, over stiles, and a few even made it up the final incline to reach the monument at the top, while the rest of us wanted to be back in time for the egg hunt at 3pm!!

The youngest children had fun gathering eggs in the grass, and then the older children looked for written clues to help find their eggs. After that there was the opportunity to compete in our well known ‘Egg Hurling Contest’. It was amazing how some of those eggs bounced, and some were caught without breaking! After the winners had been applauded and awarded, we took the opportunity to raise more money for this years charity ‘The Diana Princess of Wales Children’s Hospital’ chosen by us in memory of our young friend Stuart Buchanan. Donations were made, and people were ‘egged on’ to throw eggs at their favourite committee members. The photographs say it all!!

Fortunately everyone scrubbed up well enough to parade their beautiful Easter Bonnets at the start of the evening. The evening then continued with a karaoke and disco. We were amazed at the singing talents… of some!

It would seem we actually had a very talented field full of campers if the number of prize winners mentioned or awarded at Mondays coffee morning was anything to go by! There were additional prizes for colouring and for egg decorating, aswell as for the written quiz. The James Brockelhurst Award (for acts of stupidity) was presented this weekend to our Chairman Steve for trying to find the owner of some lost property, only to suddenly realize that the sunglasses he was holding up were actually his own! Needless to say he quickly moved on to the raffle!

All the winners from the weekend are pictured on this web page.

Later in the day the kids enjoyed some coaching and a game of volleyball, before cheering on the adults as they played a slightly more vigorous game!

Everyone had just about enough energy left to take part in a quiz later that evening. Eighteen teams entered and the winners were ‘Maureen’s Mob’. There was even a prize for the most original name (I know I should have written it down though!).

After such a fantastic weekend it was sad to have to think about packing away to go home Tuesday. The weather was still fabulous, so many of us made a day of it and at least it was only three more sleeps till the next meet!

Thank you as always to the stewards, committee, family and friends who all worked so hard to help make this a wonderful five day meet. And of course to everyone who joined us.

Thanks also to those of you that took the time to voice or write down YOUR thanks to US.We do welcome your comments or suggestions, and look forward to seeing you again soon.

BALSALL COMMON 2007

A fairly quiet weekend for the eleven units who attended. Those of us who braved the rain on Friday, and the bitter cold of Saturday, were rewarded with a beautiful spring day Sunday.

Some of us even managed the first BBQ of the season on Saturday evening. By the way like our new hairstyles? We had a laugh trying on a bag of wigs that Diane brought out, and it kept the children and some of the adults entertained over the weekend!

The James Brockelhurst trophy was awarded to Sarah Davis who announced on Saturday evening that :the planes are so low round here you can see their indicators: !Maybe it was one to many glasses of wine! Another great weekend.

HENLEY IN ARDEN HIGH SCHOOL

Our first weekend of the season was somewhat a 'mixed bag'.
We arrived in torrential rain Friday evening, and were thankful for the hard standing and use of the school hall: It meant we could take shelter and meet up with a few friends both old and new (those who hadn't opted for a cosy evening in and a early night!) We awoke to glorious sunshine Saturday morning and found there was plenty to experience- from the Horse Market to a muddy climb up Henley Mount; or a stroll down Henley high street , a spot of shopping and a welcome drink in one of the many local pubs.
Some of us spent a nostalgic Saturday evening inside the school building, reminiscing about school canteens, assemblies in the school hall, and  science rooms. But we made sure we were all outside to witness a rare lunar eclipse at 11pm.
On Sunday morning the rain returned with a vengeance; so by coffee morning only the hardy remained ! The now famous Brockelhurst trophy was awarded to Henrietta(for thinking you needed a passport to visit the I.O.W !), and the new NWDA mugs went to this weeks stewards Mark and Diane.
It would be lovely to visit this site again, with the promise of better weather and fuller turnout.

AGM 2007

16th-18th February 2007 at Rowington village hall.
This was the new venue for our AGM, held on Saturday afternoon at 3.30pm.
Those of us that camped were thankful for the milder weather, after the bleak mid winter of the previous weekend; although we knew we had the luxury of a well equipped village hall at our disposal.
The AGM was well attended by visiting members new and old, and went well. Some new committee members were welcomed on board and we were delighted to be able to present Charlotte Leivers (CCJ leader) with the Andy Buckley trophy for all the hard work she has put into making our newly formed CCJ a reality over the past year. Well done Charlotte; and thank you to the committee, family and friends for their continued support. Thanks also go to Trevor Cooke and his wife who attended our AGM from Regional Committee.
After the meeting we all enjoyed a PowerPoint presentation by Steve and Lin Kennings, about the forthcoming CCRM. We are looking forward to hosting this big annual event, for the first time in eighteen years, in June. For details, information,  and booking forms please see Following the presentation we continued into the evening with a delicious supper of baked potatoes with a choice of fillings, (thanks to all involved), Bingo with Albert Upton and his glamorous assistants, and music.
For many this was an opportunity to get together for the fist time this year, and to look forward to another great season of camping.
